Ruger's New .45LC/.45ACP Redhawk...

I took the redhawk to the range again, to try out some reloads with some new powder i got. I made some 23.2g & 24g w296 loads with several different projectiles. These are hot loads, that i copied from john linebaugh's page:
http://www.customsixguns.com/writings/dissolving_the_myth.htm

Even with the hogue grip, it was more recoil that i cared to endure. I think i'll save these loads for the rifle. :D But it showed me what kind of power you can get from this pistol. I also shot some mild cowboy loads, & ~ 50 more 45acp. under 40 yds, it was pretty accurate.. a subjective opinion, i know, but it is at least the equal to the smith 625.

These w296 loads had a lot more recoil than the 4227 loads i had done before. I don't have any velocity measurements.. i've been thinking of getting a chrony. I'm sure it would relieve a lot of 'feeling' oriented views.

The moon clips on this are easy. in just a few seconds you can remove the spent rounds, & load up more. It takes less time than picking up your spent rounds & reloading a magazine. I've got 3 more moon clips ordered, which will give me some volume at a range setting.

I might go back to the pachy grip, & try out some of those hot ruger only loads. These kick as hard (or harder) than a full powered 44 magnum. My hand still hurts, & i only shot ~ 12 rounds.
I picked up a blackhawk holster on ebay, & it carries nicely on the hip.. not too heavy, a good open carry solution.

Not sure what bullets you're using for your 23.2 and 24 grain W296 loads but, in my own load testing with a Redhawk 45LC, I've gone beyond that point.

Brian Pearce has published 50Kpsi load data for the Redhawk 45LC. That's the upper limit of the RH45. It approaches the low end of 454 data and is about as much pain as anyone can handle.

If you're interested, it's discussed here http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=211498

You may not want to try these but it's nice to know where the limit is.

yeah, i knew these weren't max loads, just good hot ones. ..they are plenty for me. I have no desire to go bigger. :D

It did help me with the idea i was toying about getting a 460svr.. or a 454 casull pistol.. not anymore. These 45c hot loads have more kick than my 44 mag. If i need more power than that, i'll just grab a rifle.

..which, btw, is a rossi 454, & it shoots those very hot loads nicely. I'm saving the more powerful loads for it, & i'll probably get some decent mid range rounds.. more than cas, but less than these big guys.

Would folks just stop posting about this gun for a while! Please? If y'all ain't careful I'm going to buy one.

I'm kidding. I have an Alaskan in .454, and a blackhawk convertible in .45/.45, and even a m92 lever gun in .454. I'm covered. Really. I just need to remind myself that I'm covered a few more times. It does look nice though.... :)

The casull seems to come into its own when you want very heavy bullets, north of 325gr. The thing is, I'm not at all sure when such heavy bullets become necessary or desirable. I have fired handguns pushing 360gr bullets well north of 1300fps M.V. and they are firmly in, "why am I doing this to myself?" territory.

I have fired two .460s, an 8" and a 2.75". They are both solidly in the "having tried it, I can no longer imagine a realistic scenario where I need it" category. But...there is a poster around here with a Ruger No. 1 in .460S&W...that would make a nifty combo.
