I can see the 10+ round glock and other hi capacity handguns starting to go, bit I'm starting to see 1911 mags disappearing now too. Dang. Found 3 Springfield stainless mags for a decent price still in stock, hopefully they'll work well with my SR1911.

I got lucky with the Pmags for my AR, The moment I saw the news on the school I ordered 3 of them.

I've never actually given much thought to having lots and lots of mags on hand. Guess that comes from being only a fair weather day target shooter. I've got 6 mags for the 1911 now, 4 for my Hi-power and 4 for the AR, but I hear others tell of having 20+

not that I would dare criticize for a moment another persons idea of what is enough. more power to them for it! I guess I'm maybe starting to get pushed around by all the panic. For the longest time I've had one mag for the AR, 3 for the 1911 and 2 for all my other guns, Never bothered my once. Now I feel strangely compelled to have dozens on hand, near panicky with no rational explanation other than "well, I need them before I can't find them" darn hysteria seems to be getting to me.....

Almost 6 months ago one of my friends bought 5 40 round & 2 30 round mags for his AR & 4 20 round mags for his XDM9, I'm with you because I have no where near that ammount in my inventory.

Don't let the panic get you. Depends on what makes you comfortable.

For me, if it requires a magazine, it better have a dozen- that's probably excessive by the measure of most folks, but magazines can be lost, stolen, damaged etc and without it a semiautomatic firearm is just a complicated single-shot.

YMMV.

Hickock45 sure does have a nice collection and a very understanding wife!

Some of my guns have sufficient amount of mags and others are lacking. It really depends on whether the guns magazine will be possibly banned. A month ago I bought my first AR. Now I have about 12-15 20 and 30 round mags. I have not even shot it yet! To cold here in Alaska. But, it's a great investment unless they take it from me. Just be happy with what you have. If you have the funds and opportunity, buy more that may be banned. You can always sell them later on. I am not worried about mags with less than 10 rounds such as my Kahr CM9. Those should still be out there after all this settles down.

For what I consider my self defense firearms I have about 40 - 50 mags for my .223 AR's, not sure exactly, and 4 of the 50 round mags for my AR57. I also have 2 XDM's in 9mm with a total of 8 mags, an XD in 9mm with 4 mags, 2 BHP's in .40 with 8 mags.

Most of my other pistols have 2 mags each, some only 1 though. For other rifles my FNAR has only 3 of the 20 round mags, my HK SLB only has 2 mags, my HK USC has 4 mags.

All I'm hearing is the assumption that new legislation targeting magazines will match the '94 legislation. Why was 10 rounds picked last time? Why is there an assumption it will be 10 rounds again?

Why not 6 shots? That makes the semi-automatic pistol similar (round-count wise) to a revolver.

dont give them any ideas

I hope they don't go up too much, I've been waiting to buy my 9mm 1911 mags till I found a good deal on some, so I could buy a few at a time. They're already like $25-30 a piece. I think I only have 4.

If we truly end up with a permanent ban on 10+ mags, I would say you can't have too many high cap, pre-ban mags. On the other hand, if we believe that a new ban is unlikely, I tend to try and have a minimum of 6 mags per gun that uses them. Certainly if I see a smokin' deal on mags somewhere I'm not opposed to having more, but unless you are a dedicated competition shooter who burns through thousands of rounds a month, I would not see the need to 20-30 mags.

Nugilum: Again, it was cause in '94 Bill Ruger came up with that crap to save his Mini-14 from the ban list. His company finally outgrew his stupidity and selfishness. And I know he's passed on, and I hate to speak ill of the dead, but he was a class A jerk for what he pulled.

How many mags should one have?
As many as you need, I guess... If you shoot any comps you need three and a couple spares. Beyond that, it probably depends on how much you do or don't like loading mags at the range.
After the AWB sunset and prices dropped, I stocked up on normal cap Glock and AR mags. I have enough spare P-Mags to fund a USO scope...at current prices anyway... Not kidding; I may put some up for sale on gunbroker. I wouldn't do it to the folks here, but if some fool is dieing to spend $50 on a pmag that I bought for $15, why not.

I read on the news that New York State is talking about going for 7 round mags.

I personally have enough mags for my 1911's and P-11.

I don't have any "evil black rifles" but I do have a couple of mean wood and blue steel babies, but they do take just 8 round clips.

I'm just picking up ammo when I see it still a decent price.

I don't see any shortage of 1911 mags, over at midway they have plenty in stock although they seem to be limiting everyone to 2 mags at a time.

Is it really about how many mags, or how many rounds w/o refilling any mags? I can see it being about mag count if your plan is to stash mags in a bunch of places, but otherwise it would seem (provided the mags are reliable) the total number of rounds they hold is what counts.

My standard with semi-auto pistols is enough mags to be able to fire 60 rounds without the need to refill a mag. I have more capacity than that for some of mine, but it seems like a good place to set the bar until I run across a bargain.

Back when I was more logical and practical with the way I administered my arsenal, I used to keep 7 full capacity factory mags minimum for any service pistol that I considered to be a combat weapon; one mag in the gun, and 6 mags in a bandolier. For example, when I had my Glock 17, I owned 7 of the Glock standard 17 round magazines, and also 4 of the 33 round Glock 18 magazines for good measure.

Recently my collection has shifted more towards oddities and collectibles, so sadly I no longer keep that many magazines for my handguns. Don't know how many magazines I have for my rifles, and the old AR and AK have been collecting dust for a while since I shifted my interest to old WWI and WWII relics, but I believe I have at least a dozen AK47 mags, and more than 20 AR15 mags. Not sure of exact numbers.

Long story short, I have ENOUGH mags for my own personal uses... but I still want more just in case. ;)

The magazine is the weakest part of a semi-automatic firearm. It can be easily damaged, lost or misplaced. If the firearm has a magazine disconnect the gun is useless and without the magazine it is at best a single shot.

While imho there is no limit on the maximum number of magazines a person should have I consider the minimum number for any magazine fed firearm to be two.
