rust preventitive?

Macmac, 35 years ago I worked as a jewelry salesman a guy comes in and asked me if a Rolex Presidential was truly solid 18 carat gold and I said yes. Actually I was starting to sweat cause the Presidential was $3500 at the time and gold was $35 an oz. I asked him why it was so important that the watch be 18 carat and he took off his stainless steel watch and showed me the back; It was eaten through to the point that you could see the movement. He was a red head. Go figure.

Well had I been just told I would never have believed it on silver.. seeing my own work nealy ruined made a full time believer of me. And in less than 2 weeks! That guy was some time ago now and he moved to parts unknown to me.

Even now I wonder what the shock he was getting was like, as he seemed uncomfortable to me, but I held hands with him and got nothing.. This guy was something of a giant too, so I was very polite asking ta' hold his hands...

I also wonder if he could have used the power he generated to boot up some device?...

Sorry to revive an old thread but since this has to do with my problem I have to.

I recently got a T/C hawken in a trade, and the barrel is rusty. I don't know if the rifling is bad yet because I need to clean out he rust. Any suggestions on what to use?

PB Blaster. Plug the nipple fill barrel and let sit overnight. Follow with bronze brush and elbow grease.

Moose, about two weeks ago I was telling Gentleman of the Charcoal about a product I use called sweetshooter. I got sick and haven't been on the forum since then but this stuff is really good stuff. I shot at a cas and put my two vaqueros in my toolbox to go home. I had an emergency at home and left the guns in the tool box for a couple of days in rainy weather and there wasn't a rust spot on them. The color case hardening looked new. I was amazed at how good that stuff protected my guns. I called the guy who I bought it from and ask him about it and said it would protect my black powder guns the same way. So I bought another gallon and used it on my black powder guns. So far,,, no rust. It is made by Tecrolan, Inc from Mineral Wells Tx. and kind of expensive but well worth it. The number is 800-932-4445. He sells this at gun shows around the state. And no, I am not a salesman, just think this is a really good product.

I use Ballistol on all my firearms including bp. A good friend gave me some to try several years ago. I had never seen nor heard of it before, but that stuff really works.

Ballistol

Ballistol works wonders. Some don't like the smell, but I actually like the smell!

But, yes, the stuff works.

Doc, I'd try the PB Blaster. I use Ballistol for cleaning and rust preventitive but I've never tried cutting rust with it. Good luck with the trade-in. Black powder and Pyrodex shooting residue can be very aggressive. I shudder to think of how many ruined guns are out there just because someone didn't read the instructions.

Pretty much any oil will prevent rust if used correctly. All I know is that I had a terrible time loading my BP rifle until I followed the advise of those who knew better. I started using Bore Butter inside and out. Since then I never have any trouble loading, no matter how much I shoot, and I never clean between shots.

The theory, as stated elsewhere, is that petroleum products react chemically with the powder residue and form a harder fouling, which can lead to loading and functioning problems, and which makes for more difficult cleaning. I don't know, but now I keep the BP guns slopped up pretty well with bore butter (and olive oil as a lube on the revolvers) and they load, shoot, and clean up really well with no fouling problems and no rust. I fired about 50 rounds through each of my .44 revolvers yesterday and they never got hard to operate.

Prolix

I have had great luck using Prolix. It combines gun cleaner and lube together. It is not petroleum based and is citrus based (I think) and won't damage any parts of your gun. You can even spray it into the action. It builds a petina over time which helps to protect the finish and prevent rusting and lubes where needed. I use it for total cleaning on all my BP and regular firearms. The only caveat is using it on plastic and other polymers which could potentially discolor slightly. You should test a just a small spot (somewhere not visible like internally) before using.

Great stuff!
