S.C. Sheriff's Department Armored Vehicle with Belt-Fed Machine Gun

Extreme cases make bad law, and bad policy. You cannot make policy for every extreme situation that arises. That’s what the gun control crowd attempts.

In any case, that thing would have rolled right over the armored car the police in the op had. This situation would certainly not justify shooting a .50 BMG at it as it rolled around the city.

Could be handy for serving “no knocks”. They can rake the house with the ma deuce to make sure it’s safe for those serving the warrant.

Don't laugh, your scenario sounds way too likely to happen if they ever get the chance.

Under the second amendment, I have no problem with an individual owning a .50 cal, belt-fed, vehicle mounted weapon.

However, I have an EXTREME problem with a civilian police agency acquiring miltary weapons with no legitimate law enforcement purpose. Not only that, but they are quite obviously wasting taxpayer money for which they should be good stewards.
I am with you Mak

"To Serve and Protect"

You know I really miss the days of Officer Friendly wearing his nice blue uniform and saying hi to the kids as he walks down the street.

I just can't see a use for it that wouldn't risk heavy collateral damage. Ma Deuce isn't a surgical instrument afterall. It's meant for warzones not warrants.

well our sheriff Joe Arpiao(spelling?) bought a tank. yes, a tank. as well as AT4s and M2 .50s. im not joking. he has some good policies, but he's a BIT nuts.

If Police dept's can justify an APC and M2 for imagined or HIGHLY UNLIKELY threats, then where does it stop?

PD Chief: Yes mayor we need M1 Abrams tanks, haven't you heard about IEDs. No they haven't been used here, but it's only a matter of time. Oh yea, we are going to need an extra budget allocation for the 120mm ammo. Why? For drug lab raids and because it's only a matter of time before the BGs use tanks on us. Yes, you can use them for your re-election photo ops.

well, in arizona, we have a real threat from drug cartels that really do pack some serious firepower. i doubt a TANK would be needed, but if the border wars intensify and move north(highly unlikely), it could be "handy"

113's are very easy to stop/disable/destroy.
I don't see a remote or splinter shield for the M2 either so it would be relatively easy to keep it out of play.

Matter of fact I can think of a few groups that would love to entice this sheriff into bringing it out, just to make a spectacle of it's destruction, and show their ability to 'play' this department.

He better be real careful about where and how he employs it. Costly and embarrassing.

Sam

Seriously, AT4s? I didn't know anyone outside the real military could legally access that sort of hardware

our sheriff department has it's own armory containing almost every small arm (and some "large arms") known to man. all this was made possible by a man who feeds prisoners on $0.60 per day using green bologna. and issues pink underwear. also houses them in a massive open air jail using korean war army tents. no air conditioning, no tv, no magazines, no nothing. he also cares not for human rights. arizona is the only state that uses chain gains anymore (i think) as well as the only place in the WORLD to use female chain gangs. dont underestimate what Sheriff Joe will (and can) do.

Would NOT give me the warm and fuzzies if any county around me got one of these things!

Yeah, I GUESS you could stop an armored bulldozer with a .50

But just how many armored bulldozers are likely to show up at any given place?

Oh yeah, I've heard of that guy. We used to have a similar character in North Carolina, Sheriff Hege. He had a policy of daily roadblocks in his county, and had a TV show for a while. He later got ousted over corruption, something like 15 felonies.

I guess they aren't really worried about collateral damage or innocent bystanders with an M2 running wild. That's insane.

Well with new smart bombs, you would think no-knock warrants could be better served while minimizing civilian casualties. Maybe some bunker busters for those people hiding in basements.

Makes you wonder what they're going to do to civilians when they need armored track vehicles and crew served weapons. Oh well, we pay for crap like that.

More than the OMG .50cal kind of comments.......

The vehicle seems to be a HUGE waste of taxpayer $$$.

The people from this area ought to vote out the current government (and possibly the Sheriff if that is an elected position). For what they paid for the vehicle, they could have used that $$$ to put more officers on the street. Something that will do more to curb crime than any "gadget" they could buy.

I haven't read any of the news articles, but I'd be willing to bet they acquired it through a state or federal grant program. It's nice when local government can stick some other tax payers for the bill, that way they don't have to worry about getting voted out of office by the locals!

What a bloated government we've allowed to grow. It seems like limited government is nothing more than a pipe dream at this point.
