S&W 25-2

As mentioned, factory 5” barrels are not only rare, they are scarce. Before shelling out anything for an odd factory barrel length, get verification.

That said, $1400 is not far out of line for a shootable N frame in good condition.

I saw one today in good condition asking $1400
45 acp 5" barrel, seems a bit high to me.
What say you?

If a factory 5 inch barrel, it sounds a bit low.

More than likely, somebody had it cut down. Yeah, that price is high.

If the barrel rollmarks are off center, I think that's an indication it's a hack job.

How many rifling grooves does the 25-2 have? Six or five.

S&W used the 6 groove rifling as specified by the Army for the Model 1917. They continued to use that specification for all the 45 ACP revolver models until the Model 325.

How many of the 25-2 45 acp were made?
I do not have an answer for that. S&W did not build the Models in sequential serial order nor did they allot blocks of numbers to the various models. At some point after finishing the forged frame the serial number was applied to the frame and the frames were put in to storage to be drawn out when an order for an N frame was called. The worker pulled the frame, regardless of number and built what was ordered. Two consecutive numbers could be chambered for different cartridges and may have left the factory years apart.

Moon clips is all I see mentioned in this thread. Doesn't anybody reload any more? As a long time loader, I switched over fully to .45 Auto Rim brass back in the 80's-90's. No modification of the cylinder needed for their use. No fighting with mooning/demooning clips. (Yes, i owned a BMI tool!).

I've sold my Smith 25-3 cause of med issues and will be selling off my supply of AR brass ( around 800 cases) in the near future. But I'd gladly make that decision over again.

I reload and have no issue using moon clips for revolvers designed for auto cartridges with moon clips. I have had no interest in getting into 45 auto rim reloading. But, what ever floats your boat. Your choice and I will not speak badly of it.

I have no need for 45 Auto Rim or the 9mm Federal auto rim ( if that is what it is called). I have the moon clip tools to load them for my revolvers and do not need the after market cases to be able to use the after market cases.

I'll make final judgment and comment as as information becomes available on the subject.
