S&W 4506-1,is it a 1911?

ok,i know a 1911 is single action only.but is a S&W 4506-1 considerd a 1911 any way,even though it is a sa/da?
its a single stack .45.and the apperance is simaler to a 1911.

No.
Nothing is even similar, except the S&W operates on the browning short recoil system.

The 4506 is based on the S&W Model 39 9mm SA/DA operating system of the early 1950's.
Which was based in some ways on the German Walther P-38 of WWII.

I have a 1911 and a 4506, they are not close at all. The only similarities are they both are .45ACP pistols with single stack magazines and metal frames.

This is interesting as I've seen other people using "1911" as a generic term for a single stack pistol.

What the 4506 shares with the 1911 are things it shares with nearly every metal-framed, tilt barrel, single stack .45 in existence.

As far as that goes, while I'm intrigued by it, I don't even consider Colt's own DAO 1911 to be a 1911. Of course in this case (the Colt) I understand that I am wrong and they are correct because it's their company, name and pistol.

The S&W version of 1911 is called 745 the 45xx series guns are far superior to the 1911. This should be of no surprise as they were designed to challenge excellent SIG Sauer pistols in the marketplace while 1911 is WWI relic.

The S&W 945 was a much closer approximation to the 1911 than the 4506 or 745.

The 1911 isn't that bad it was way better then Luger 08 thingy that needed "gunsuit holster" to keep dirt and dust away from the gun.

945 is the closest third gen approximation to the 1911. It's a 3rd gen slide barrel and frame (uses 4506 magazines with a new, second, catch notch) with 1911 type hammer/trigger/sear/grip saftey etc. jammed. Nice guns, but pricey.

Actually mag body dims are the same except locking cutout is in different spot.

Really? I don't doubt you, but if that's true, it's a whole new level of stupid. I mean, the whole clip/magazine, pistol/handgun thing is annoying but calling any single stack a 1911... i mean, c'mon.

That would make a Kahr P9 a 1911.

Yeah, I thought it was weird too. I've seen it in Gunbroker descriptions of guns like the S&W Model 39 which I guess might start to look a 1911 after a few pitchers of Founders All Day IPA.

I had a very early one, that was actually a 4506 mag, with a second notch milled in. Later mags may just have a single notch.

People put 1911 into the name on auction sights so that when an individual searches "1911" they will see the auction (even if the gun in question isn't a 1911). I just call it false advertising.
