What is the best ammo for the S&W 460.I want a good ammo for deer hunting . I want something for the range of 100 to 150 yards and something to drop them where they stand. Is the 460,454 Causll,or the 45 Long Colt is the best and a good one in all three calibers. Thank for the help.

I use the hornady 200gr sst for right now. :D

Have you shot the gun at 150 yards?

What kind of groups do you get from different ammo?

How much do you want to compensate for drop?

Have you practiced with different velocities like that at different distances out to 150 yards?

.460 S&W is "the best" of the three since it has the highest velocity and the flattest trajectory. There's more to it than that, though.

I prefer to use the Hornady 240gr. or 300 gr. XTP Mags loaded over either H110 or Lil' Gun. I shoot iron sights yet, and am capable of consistently hitting a six inch bullseye @ 100 yards. The XTP-Mags(not to be confused with the standard XTPs in .45 cal) are made especially for expansion and penetration at the velocities achieved by the .460 cartridge. I used factory 200 gr. SSTs at first but found them to be a bit fragile on deer at close range. Altho they were accurate, they tended to "blow-up" on impact with minimal penetration......I only use them now for target practice and varmints.

I agree...no bullet is gonna "drop them where they stand" unless you do your part.

If you don't reload, look at some of the loads from Cor-bon in the 240 to 300 gr. range.

As buck460XVR, I reload my own rounds and for deer, the 240 gr. XTP Mags are great. I also loaded up some 260 gr. Nosler Partitions, and some 300 gr. hard cast bullets.

I have shot all of these loads out to 150 and 175 yards, with a scoped S&W 460 Mag. My gun is sighted in for 2 inch's high at 100 yards, with the loads I have, I do not have to hold over at all to hit my 150 and 175 yard targets.

The only sure way to drop them in there tracks is to hit the CNS, brain or spine shot.

I also never like them 200 gr. SST Hornady bullets.
