I saw a S&W 547 9mm in a pawn shop today. Mechanically it's in great shape but it has a big ugly scratch (gouge?) down the barrel that goes to bare metal, and I can't tell if the grips are original or replacements. Sorry, no pics. Just imagine that your GF took a screwdriver to your 85% model 19.

I understand these are somewhat collectible - do any of you have an idea of a price range for these now?

Can something like that be fixed? It's a cosmetic scratch, but a heavy one.

For current pricing on 547s, check the auction sites such as Gunbroker. Prices are quite high but they do fluctuate, and yes, they do have collector value. On the down side, the scratch will reduce collector value but you have a fine shooter. You will never be able to restore the scratch to like new condition, but you should be able to smooth it out and apply some cold blue to make it less noticeable. Hope you will be able to post photos of your 547.

How much do they want for it? Nice ones run anywhere from $700+ to over a grand.

I checked several auction sites and was only able to learn how much is too much for an LNIB collector piece. I searched old BST postings here as well and I'm seeing a range of $750-1000 for a 100% item with the box. They want $340 and my gut says that's too much.

Although the scratch ruins any real collector value, if you can get it for the right price, buy it and send it to S&W for refinish.

Just another option.

I'd pick it up for $300, no question, up to you if the gouge matters that much. I got a sweet 28-2 for $250 about five or six years ago, and they are way more common than the 547s ever were.

I'd grab this in a flash, especially if you can get it down a bit more or at least OTD for that. Half a flash if it's a 3".

I had one in good shape and stupidly parted with it years ago.

Send it off to SW for a refinish if a quick attempt at touching it up with cold blue doesn't do it for you.

Thanks for all your input with this gun. I made an offer and was declined, and also discovered it's not really suitable for IDPA. Some corrections to my initial post: First, I am no expert - I read a lot but don't have any really good revolvers. Take this info for what it's worth. Second, the asking price was $389 not $339... oops. They came down to $350 OTD, which I declined.

Mechanically I'd rank the gun at 85%. The bore is shiny, the trigger feels smooth and it locks up ok. There's no top strap erosion and the barrel/cylinder clearance looks close and even all the way around. Wear marks on the cylinder show it has been shot a bit.

Cosmetically I'd rank it 30%. It has some dings here and there, about 1"sq surface rust on one side with no pitting and the big scratch on the barrel. I got an email quote from S&W to refinish it for $210, plus shipping I'd assume.

these guys have it:

please don't take my word for condition, I am no expert. Ask for pics! Enjoy!
