If you can find one of these you won't regret it, super trigger and make me look like I know what I am doing pulling the trigger. I also really like these 327 black guns.

I've always wanted an 8 shot master blaster, but just don't have the money for one since my 3 other 357's cover my needs.

I also can't justify it when I already have a 686+. $1100 for one more shot...... nah.

I can't help but drool when I see one though.

$1100 for one more shot...... nah.

I think you're missing a few things...

-One more shot
-Unfluted Cylinder
-Cylinder cut for moon clips
-Chamfered charging holes
-Ball detent lockup and resultant full length ejector
-Recessed crown
-Slab-sided barrel
-Properly clocked barrel (!)
-Trigger overtravel stop
-Dovetailed Millet front sight
-Chromed hammer & trigger
-Tuned action
-Wooden grips (vs. composite)
-Bead blasted finish (vs. brushed)

Any given buyer may or may not care about any/all of those items, but these touches are the result of years of customizations that many revolver shooters developed, either to help the usability of said gun, or to simply get style points. Those custom upgrades are never cheap. I think I paid $1000 for my UDR, so for me it was easy to see $300 in upgrades over the basic offerings. YMMV...

Well I was actually talking about the 5" PC gun.

While the UDR is certainly an interesting gun, it's never been one that I particularly felt the need to own. On a large frame gun, I prefer a longer barrel for an open carry gun, or for a longer sight radius at the range. I don't really need a large frame snub, or rather I don't have enough discretionary funds to warrant one, and I choose to conceal smaller guns. I am aware of all the fine tuning and touches on the UDR, and most of them would be worth the extra money in my mind if I was really keen on getting a 627, but not all.

The part I left off is that I have a 686 Competitor PC gun with many similar upgrades though it is only a 6 shooter, and a different beast really with the weighted barrel system. PC guns are definitely worth the price to me, but I just don't need a 627 of any kind really.

My one extra shot comment was oversimplified.

My 357 lineup includes the aforementioned 686 PC gun, a 686+ 3" Talo edition, and a 3" Ruger SP101. I have my bases covered, but some day when I have more funds, A 27 or 627 may be added.

You should take a picture of that snub stoked with Hornady Critical Defense rounds, from the visual perspective of being at the wrong end of the gun. Staring at all those blood-red hollow point inserts ought to cause any sane person to give it up immediately.

Nice pics. Great gun.

Yup, definitely a Drool over gun, but not a Need

Thanks 4 the pics to get me drooling and considering a second mortgage on my house to get the 627 again!:what:

I agree w/ 460 Kodiak that I would only want it in a 5", and that it is a wish list gun, but not a need, and agree w/ everybody else that it offers alot of worth it touches IF/when I can afford them. I have a Model 386 w/ 6" brl scandium lightweight 7shot, w/ hi-vis sight for deer and lightweigth trail gun, and now a new-to-me LCR 357. So I can't say I need it, but I have alot of guns my wife is sure i don't need either:p

Can't help but drool though, and my implusive side says I can afford it, then my rational brain chimes in that I could consider it an investment, and then I'm off to the races:evil:

If you want a great shooter, this is a great option. If you want an investment, personally I'd put the money elsewhere. Not that you'd lose money on a 627 down the line, but I think you could do better for return on your dollars with a rarer gun..... Or a few oil shares since oil is way down..... Or an ounce of gold.....

If you really can afford it though without a problem, go for it!

I was very close to picking one of these up... Just never found one I liked the fit and finish one. Pretty much ever SW I find around here is total garbage... I have a 625 PC (PERFORMANCE CENTER, mind you) that has had a couple trips to the factory before I finally just sent it to a good gunsmith. I like the revolvers they are putting out, but you'd think the performance center would be able to regulate POI with sights, get a fairly straight barrel on there, keep it from shaving lead etc lol.

The 625 is awesome now by the way, but it was frustrating to say the least. I shoot a 686 SSR that was great from day one, no issues and put together well. Funny since it was 1/3 cheaper than the PC models, but THAT is what I would expect for the 1k PC guns.

FWIW I would rather get an old plain jane model and have a good gunsmith work it. Probably ballpark same price, but come out ahead with a much better revolver.

that's scarry...

I can get a like new 627 5''brl with 100rounds 357 & extra Hogue grips with box and papers for $900. It's very tempting :)

My buddy has a 5". I shot it just the other day. There is nothing performance center about the trigger. It is fairly heavy. Off a rest it's 25 yard groups were good, but nothing over the top.

This gun should have at least a 2.5-inch barrel, if not 3 inches. The current 2-inch barrel is just too disportionate on an N frame. I'd also like to see it chambered in 327 MAG, which ought to give around a 10+ round capacity. Now,that would be a gun to be reckoned with under any circumstances.

The 627 UDR has a 2-5/8" barrel. You must be thinking of the 327.

How sweet a deal at $900 w/ 100 rounds?

I am starting to fall out of love w/ the 627 based on some of the reviews submitted in this thread, especially folks saying the trigger is not great and that folks have had to get them re-worked.
Plus, the more I think about my 386 6" w/ 7 round capacity, the why? question becomes very real.
But, at $900 w/ 100 rounds in near-new condition, financially speaking, how much of a steal is that?

I don't think it's that great a of a steal unless you really want it. I mean you can pick up a NIB one for $1100-$1300. And 100 rounds of target 357 is what, 50-$60 in value, and what, $25 for the Hogue grip? Actually I think these guns come with the extra grip already.

Personally, all my Smiths get after market Nill grips that are large enough to suit my hand and cover the backstrap and give me a proper trigger reach. All the Hogue grips I own are sitting in a box.

I don't think you'd be getting ripped off, but I don't think you're getting a fantastic bargain. It seems a fair price to me. For $800..... yeah ok. But for a gun you are saying you don't really need?

I can see the "Want Demon" is whispering loudly in your ear. That's ok man, as long as your bills are paid, and your wife isn't mad at you. If you decide it serves no purpose you can always shuffle it on. But I don't think the price warrants you frantically slapping down the cash. These guns aren't that hard to find online. I've never handled one in person, but they are on Gunbroker a lot.

Michael Corleoni "Godfather III" and 627 and 329

Godfather III, but maybe they recycled it:cool:

As for guns, New Idea:
the same reputable neighbor who has the like new 2014 627 8 shot 5" also has a 329 PD Scandium/Titanium 44 w/ 4" brl for about same $.

I am essentially lookin for a solid great shooting revolver for occassional open carry and to satisfy my lust for sweet S&W steel and serve as trail gun and must be a reasonably capable "just for the hell of it" deer and/or hog hunter, with a barrel shorter than 6".
Thus, the 44 Mag enters the picture along w/ the 627.

Please note: I already have a 454/45 SRH 7.5" and a
S&W 386 357scandium XL Hunter 6"brl for hunting, and the Scandium 386 makes a nice light weight trail gun carry. Somehow, my gun lust still ain't satisfied:D
I am also considering the 44 S&W 629 V-Comp 4" and the 629 Stealth Hunter 7.5" but don't know where to find them or if i can afford them.
What does the compensator do on the V-Comp? Which of all of the above would be a better Hunting pistol (aside from the obvious Stealth Hunter?)

Thanks! I realize this must seem crazy to many of you.;)

If its an 8-shot 5" PC for $900 plus ammo it must have the lock. That's still a decent price.

It's been a while but, IIRC, all I did for trigger work was to replace the hammer spring with a Miculeck or equivalent. The trigger is quite good.

If you think in terms of a premium, you really aren't paying that much. Nothing in this league is going to set you back much less than $900. If you can afford it, buy it. The cost of entry is not going down.

Umm.... well, I've never fired a scandium 44 mag, but I just don't envision it being a gun you are going to want to shoot full house magnums out of a lot. And given that you have a SRH in 454, I don't really see what you'd get out of the 329 that you aren't going to get out of the 454 with more comfortable shooting, except for a lighter weight gun that will essentially be a 44 spl.

I am also considering the 44 S&W 629 V-Comp 4" and the 629 Stealth Hunter 7.5" but don't know where to find them or if i can afford them.

The Stealth Hunter is a cool gun. I handled one a few years back and wanted it, but my 460V made it redundant.

What does the compensator do on the V-Comp? Which of all of the above would be a better Hunting pistol (aside from the obvious Stealth Hunter?)

It compensates for muzzle flip/rise by venting gasses upward through the ports, essentially helping you get back on target faster. To be honest, I think the V-Comps are some of the ugliest revolvers ever produced...... ever. But that's just my opinion and doesn't make it not a great shooter. I think a V-Comp would serve you well for a trail/hunting gun. The Stealth Hunter is obviously better suited for hunting.

Yep, but only because you are shopping for a gun you don't need, so your requirements are a little fuzzy. It's been a fun discussion though.

Have you looked at the 629 and 686 Competitors? They are sweet guns and my 686 is the most accurate gun I have ever fired. It would be a sweet hunting gun, but would likely require a custom holster.

How about something totally different, just to throw ideas at you. I've always wanted a 3" 629 Talo edition. Useful? Yes. Utilizing the potential of the 44 cartridge? No.

Oh, what about an X frame? If you have a 454 SRH, maybe the 6.5 inch 500 magnum? The 6.5 has a tapered barrel and balances nicely in the hand, if you are a larger guy. It's not terribly trail or wallet friendly though.

Thanks Guys: Capability of 357 vs 44?

460 Kodiak, ur a funny dude! Perhaps u were being tongue in cheek about the 500? Like I need another tree to hunt up...:banghead:
Thanks bikemutt et al for your fun and good feedback.
Any more info on the 629 and 686 Competitor would be appreciated, but I am now strongly leaning towards 357 and away from 44 mag, since I have the 454/45 with hot 45, so don't need a 44, and have 2 357 revolvers and ammo already, so think I'll stick w/ 357 until the burn:fire: and $$$ arise for the 44 Stealth Hunter or some such.

I have ruled out the 329PD 44.
Leaning back to the 627. But if the Competitor is any better/cheaper and I can find one fast I could go with that.

What can a 357 do well as far as hunting? What r its limits?
What can a 44 do better for hunting that a hot 45 or 454 casul can not?

I have owned the 329PD thrice :p

I really wanted to like that revolver, it's perfect in many ways. But, its quite difficult to manage the recoil. I sold mine to a friend, who sold it back to me, to whom I sold it back, who sold it back to me, to whom I sold it again. He finally kept the darn thing as he moved to Alaska.

I think my ideal revolver in that class would be a 329PD in 357 magnum (S&W, that's a hint).
