Welcome...

I look at it this way ... my 642 is not intended to be a range gun. For me - purely self defense. That being said, when I need to use it, I can put up with the standard smaller grips and tuck it in my front pocket with a Mika holster. I do go to the range with it - don't get me wrong, but I don't shoot hundreds of rounds at a time thru it due to the kick. If I want to put lots of rounds in at the range, I've got another gun for that. A bigger set of grips would probably help the 642, but I don't want to sacrifice the convenience of the gun's size itself.

Welcome to the gang..........

Hello. I had good luck at an inexpensive price with the "Hideout Grips" sold at Brownells.

These grips are made of nylon and the ones I've tried on J-frames fit snugly. They do not extend below the bottom of the grip frame. They are a tiny bit thicker than the wooden grips that used to come on the S&W snubs. If you wish to use a speed loader, these will have to be relieved similarly to those shown in the picture. It took about 10 minutes with a dremel and then fine sandpaper. If you don't use speedloaders, it is a non-issue.

I don't recall the price, but when I bought these, the cost was something like $16.00.

Best.

Well I think I found what I'm looking for.Bought a set of unkle mikes #59010 at a gun show yesterday.these are right in between the stock grip and the pachmayr.feels great in my hand doesn't show thru my pocket.

I recently bought a 642....I have to hold the gun a little high in my hand, and my pinky does get a little lonely waving in the wind...but I can make decent hits at 7 yards.....actually a few weeks ago I used it at IDPA and was amazed at how good it shot.but I have a lot of snubby experience too.

I got my hand torn up so badly with the 642 factory grips, I took them off and put on a set of plain old wood grips like they used to make. I get much better results and a grip I can hang on to. I don't recommend that approach for everyone, but those grips are what I am used to and what work for me.
