My wife and I were at a gun shop the other day. She wanted to handle a few handguns. She went in knowing she wanted a 9mm pistol with a safety, preferably something either all or mostly steel, to help mitigate recoil, while also being on the small-ish side of "duty" so she could CC it if she later decides she wants to.

She started by looking at the SR9E and SR9C. I did my best to keep my mouth shut and let it be a process she went through by herself so that I wouldn't influence her decision. She was shown a used S&W, model that I don't recall the name of. From there, she was shown a used (great condition) S&W 915 she about fell in love with. At first I was a bit iffy about whether or not it would be a good choice, but after reading reviews that were almost completely favorable, it seems like a really solid choice.

It evidently takes the same mags as the 5906, and they're still being made by both S&W and Mec-Gar, so that's great.

What about holsters? Anyone know if a holster made for the 5906 would fit this 3rd gen Smith? Looking for something like the Crossbreed Supertuck, ideally. None of the major makers I checked offer a holster specifically for this gun.

The 915 is basically a 5906 with an alloy frame instead of the stainless steel that u see on the 5906 it also a few plastic parts but its still accurate and very reliable... remember the s&w 3rd gen series of pistols was carried by alot of police agencies before glock came on the scene...

Those guns were built to take alot of abuse and keep going.. long story it was built to compete with the beretta 92 and sig 226 back in the day... i think u should buy it.. cant go wrong with a s&w 3rd gen pistol....

Congrats on a very nice pistol! :)

The 3rd gen Smiths are great guns on so many levels and don't worry when people tell you you can't work DA/SA well, it's just as easy as riding the reset that the Glock guys are always talking about.

Any holster for the 59xx series should work as well as the ones for the 4006.
Most SIG p226 leather holster work also.

Fyi on holsters like kydex made for 5906s. ....If the maker only has a squared trigger guard gun model and your 915 is a round trigger guard or in general your 5906 is a round trigger guard or vice versa.......it will fit but will affect how well the trigger is covered.

Always ask the maker.....

I like the 3rd gen S&W pistols and have 4 of them. The 3913, 908, 5906, and 6906. They are still some of the best guns ever made. I have shot thousands of rounds through them and S&W still services them as well. Recently my 6906 had a decocker fall out of the left side and they sent me a new replacement. NO CHARGE. Great guns from a great company. Enjoy the one you have. Snoop

Nice acquisition. I'm partial to S&W autos myself, and would love to expend my collection beyond just the one 2nd gen I have. The 910 and 915 were the 'budget' models of the 3rd generation, but were still very high quality fire arms. You should not be disappointed.

I have a 915. Great gun.

As to Holsters, take the gun in with you and try some
made for different brands. Especially the M & P full size.
Much of the shape of the 915 was incorporated into the
M & P. I have several of those holsters that I use with the
915.
I even did a little drimmel work on a Serpa and it works great
but off hand I cannot remember for which gun it was originally made.

Good luck. Good Shooting. :)

Those old Smith autos are solid , reliable - good in all ways. Get , you and your wife will love it.

If she likes the 915 it's an easy home run. Accurate enough for self defense and plinking (though not necessarily a "tack driver") and as reliable as gravity. Count me among the S&W 3rd Gen fans. For carry you might want to see if you can find a 3913/14/53 or 3954. Same great reliability in single stack form

I had one for about 10 years. It was good gun and I found several holsters - good ones, that is - that fit it just fine. I wish I still had it.

Before Glock underbid everyone else in the LEO market, the 915 was used by quite a bit LEO agencies. Good side arms, wish I never sold mine.
