S&w m&p 15

My friend at work has had one for a year or so. Takes care of the wild hogs and no hiccups. I bought a DPMS Sportacle for cheap and its been a good one also. Everybody trashes these guns like they arent any good but its accurate and has never failed me in six years. You can buy a high priced AR if you want to, but a 600 dollar rifle is just as accurate and dependable. You might have a little trouble mounting your can opener on it but they are light and really quick in the woods.

What makes them cheaper than the others? I noticed it didn't have forward assist. Anything else?

They are getting low enough in price that I may have to get one. But what to sell for the $? I can't think of anything to part with.Decisions.Guess I won't get one right away.

S&W cut some cost off by using a plain heavy carbine barrel (w/o chrome lining) and by omitting the forward assist and ejection port cover. That removed some machining and cost but still resulted in a dependable rifle.

If I had an extra $600 and wanted an AR, I'd either go for the M&P Sport or maybe grab a PSA lower and try to get close to that price by assembling on that.

You should be here bragging that you got one for $600. Mine has been flawless through about 500 rounds.

You're looking at the Sport unless your LGS doesn't know the difference. From my understanding the Sport is like the M&P15 but doesn't come with chrome lined bbl, removable trigger guard, forward assist, dust cover, etc.

For a range gun I don't think most of those things are needed. For a more serious rifle I'd go Colt, BCM, etc.

Anyone know if the Sport has chrome lined gas key, carrier, etc.?

The Sport has a straight medium contour bbl, not a heavy bbl. The bbl isn't chrome lined, but it's black nitrided (aka Melonite, Tennifer, Tufftride) which eliminates the thickness variances present in chrome lining, and it's at least as durable as chrome lining (AAC's testing found it to be more durable). So, it's actually better than hard chrome lining. Yes, I wish they'd kept the 1:8 twist 5R bbl that was on the original sport, but the 1:9 twist button rifled bbl is still darn good. The Sport has the same BCG as the rest of the M&P line: HPT/MPI bolt, and chrome lined carrier and gas key. For under $600 the Sport is still a great buy.

Like the previous posts, I assume you are talking about the M&P 15 Sport (as there are a number of M&P 15 models). I've had mine for around a year and a half and been entirely satsified with it. They have made one or two minor changes since I bougth mine (the rifling mentioned by ugaarguy) but I think its still one of the best values in prebuilt, entry-level ARs.

Usually if no forward assist, the whole lower receiver is "smooth" and has no dust door, just an open hole the brass flies out of. To see what manufaCTURERS are doing inside the guns and how they compare, google "So you want to buy an AR15 huh?" and read that thread. A LOT of info about the guns that are available out there in this thread, materials, how tested, feed ramps, M4 feed ramps and which type uppers they best work in, which companies are doing it that way, which are not, and so on.

I think the M&P Sport is probably the best bargain going in ARs right now.
I don't think its absolutely the best one out there, but I've shot one and it would shoot with any of them. With optics, sub MOA groups aren't a problem. When I'm in the market its what I'll get.

Here's one on Gunbroker for under the $600 mark. It's pretty common now.

i'm still just amazed that you can get reasonable quality ARs under $600 now.

I should buy a few of them and put them back on GB the next time a Democrat is elected. I Wouldn't gouge, but I'd start the bidding at $100 and watch them fight over it. lol

My S&W M&P 15 shoots great, it is a nice, no frills, AR-15 for someone on a
budget. Anything less than $ 600.00 is a good deal for one.

Don't count on the prices going nearly as high as they did right after 44's re-election.

The market is swamped.

That, and its STILL A LOT OF WORK to effectively sell firearms online. If your time is worth anything, you might be disappointed with the net profit after your investment and aggravation.

Remember too, the guys who do this professionally are ready to play the game too. The flares we are seeing now is just the gas-venting from the pipeline that is ready to flow.

That sounds like a great buy to me...they are selling for much more locally...plus when will you even need an ejection port cover or a forward assit.

But don't go by me, I paid more than that just for my upper (BCM)

The m and p sport is great bang for the buck. Too me the lack of forward assist and dust cover is no big deal.
when is the last time you needed forward assist anyway ?
the dust cover pops open after your first shot and stays in the open position on a dust cover equipped rifle anyway.
How many military weapons around the world have forward assist and a dust cover ? Not many.

what is the point here ? oh yeah, the lack of forward assist and dust cover should not give you the feeling you are getting a inferior firearm, you are not.

And the lack of these items is what allows S and W to offer you this well made firearm at a lower no frills price.

I say good job to S and W.
