I went out shopping again for a AR15 and I pretty much know what I want as far as grip and sights so I was going to buy a striped down version so I could add what I wanted to later.

Well while shopping I found a LGS that had S&W M&P AR15 OR versions for $799 but, when I asked the sales person about transfer to IL (The LGS was in IN.) he told me that they are having a sale soon and they should be marked down to $699!!!

Now I am guessing that this is a great price but, seeing how I don't get out all that often I wanted to be sure?:p

From what I understand, the MP15's go for around $800 so for $700, you're doing ok. You could probably find a used one with accessories for around $800 if you're good at being patient.

It's a far cry from CDNN's $600 blowout six months ago but it's pretty good considering that I can't do any better than $840 locally.

How does S&W stack up to other AR on the market?

I checked and their barrels are "Batch" tested and made of 4140 steel and also have a 1:9 twist.

I bought an M&P 15 OR for $800 back several months before cdnn had that blowout sale...:banghead:

I like it and am very happy with the quality, keep in mind though that you will have to either buy optics or irons to make the rifle usable, so factor that cost into your price analysis. That said, i think $699 is a good deal on that rifle, and if i was looking for one I'd jump on it (or wait for CDNN to dump rifles again).

As for M&P-15 quality, I think its quite good, obviously you can pay more and get more features and mil spec conformance. I believe that for my purposes I would start seeing diminishing returns chasing extra features much beyond the $800-900 price range. I know that the M4 carbine chart is somewhat controversial, but it at least gives comparison points between the different brands in relation to the mil-spec baseline. Whether you need an entirely mil-spec rifle for your purposes is up to you.

Said chart:

~$.02

Thanks Scotty. I have seen the chart a few times and your right it does help at least gives us new to the AR world a place to start comparing them.

I have seen what I think is a great deal on a Daniel Defense AR with sights for about $1000 after transfer and shipping. I handled a LMT AR at the same store that has the S&W's and I could feel the difference in tolerances which were much tighter and smoother on the LMT but, it is a little out of my price range at $1500.

Just got a flyer from Gander Mountain selling the M&P Optics Ready for $1000. I think they were selling it for $800 about a year ago.

Ouch! $1000! I can't even bring myself to stop at a GM anymore because of their ridiculous high prices! Cabelas looks like the Dollar Store next to Gander!

This was supposedly after a price break of $200. So potentially they are selling it normally for $1200.

That is over S&W's MSRP...

I bought my M&P15OR at Sportsman's Warehouse at Christmas time. Normal price there is $949. They had a christmas sale for $749. I also got the S&W Military appreciation $100 rebate. Got the M&P15OR for $649.

of the four AR's I have owned the Smith was the highest quality modern build. The SP1 was the only AR I have been around I liked better. My Smith had a high quality finish and tight fit between upper and lower. Everything (except trigger) was top notch. Trigger had potential but needed work.

S&W is a good gun, perhaps one rung below Colt/LMT/Noveske/DD/Bravo but a rung above Bushmaster, RRA, Stag, etc. It's definitely closer to the milspec end of things than the commercial end of things. You won't be disappointed!

I have the S&W and it's been reliable thus far. It's not the top of the line but I wanted something with good quality that I can tinker and learn how the gun operates. This way I'm less likely to do something moronic with my next rifle, which will be a Noveske.

Gander Mountain is THE place to overpay on a gun.

Check Bud's and see if your LGS is close on price. Be sure to factor in the additional 3% for "non-cash" pricing, FFL transfer and your time (involved in making a second trip). Be sure to factor sales tax with the LGS price. My prefered LGS is usually VERY close or sometimes even CHEAPER than buying online.

Be sure to factor sales tax

Get this one! I called a FFL/LGS today to ask about a transfer and he told me that I will be charged IL state sales taxes if I did not pay them to the sellers state! So, either way I have to figure in the sales taxes! They are lower in IN then in IL so I am going to go buy it there in IN.

There is a gun show this weekend and they said that they might even be lower as a "Gun Show Special Price"?

How does the S&W military rebate work? Is it good for vets as well? Or only active duty?

You can't really make that blanket statement. A lot of their pricing seems to be pulled out of a hat at random and always errs on the high side but you can occasionally find a good deal there too. Some new stuff is very competitive and sometimes you can find a used gun for a steal. Like the near mint Marlin .444 I found there last year for $300. You just have to know what you're looking at and what it should cost. Buyer beware.

Yes he can! Finding a deal there in like hitting the lotto!

I went to Gander when they had a outdoor tent sale and the prices were still much higher then Cabelas normal every day prices!

I have another question about the S&W M&P AR OR? I was looking at buying some Mag Pul flip up backup sights and I think I can't use the front one on this rifle because the front rail is also the gas block?

Just want to buy the right stuff for my AR.

I am heading to the gun shop now to buy it! :) :)

Well I just got back from the gun shop and well.... I bought one!:D

Oh but, wait I bought 2! :neener:

I went with my girlfriend and she wanted a AR as well and with the price at $699 it was hard to pass on!

I am a bit ticked about the wait that the FBI is putting me through though? A full week til I can pick them up? This is not my first new gun buy?

I also stopped at a Gunsmith/gun shop not far from my house on the way there. This shop I have never been to but he had some unbelievable shotguns with price tags to match at $20,000+++++++!!!!! He told me that he does FFL transfers and does not charge sales taxes? Maybe it a Cook county thing?

Here's the deal on the front sight. It is the SAME PLAIN as the rear rail. So you want to get a rail mount front sight. So it's the SAME LEVEL PLAIN as the rear. DON'T get one that says "GAS BLOCK". A NORMAL gas block is actually LOWER than the main rail. If you put a "Gas Block" front sight on an M&P15 OR, it will be too tall, which means you'll be shooting about 2 feet too low. So remember; get a rail mount front sight, or something that mentions the SAME PLAIN as the rear.

As for Magpul MBUS; DO NOT get one for the front sight. The gas block gets very hot and can melt it. A Magpul MBUS for the rear is fine. I bought a Yankee Hill for my front sight. it's a flip down. Normally about $80, but I got it on sale for $50. But there's a lot of good backup sights out there.
