S&W M&P

Where do I go to find a reasonable deal on a S&W M&P? I’d like a pre 10 if I can find one in good shape and cheap enough and while I’m at it, I’d like the long-throw and round butt too. Any ideas?

Gunbroker has them but most seem over priced or pitted. I just recently got a bug for one of these old revolvers and I was thinking $200 or so on the price. Thoughts?

Somehow I think you'll have to bide your time but possibly your best chance might be at a gun show.

That said you may have to pay quite a high price for a good one if found. Old Fuff if he sees this thread might well be able to provide you with some expert opinion, as also might Ala Dan.

From time too time, I get the S&W M&P model 10's in assorted barrel
lengths; and most of the time I can afford to pass these along at an
attractive price. Most common barrel length seems to be the 4"; but
I have had some with a 2" and 5" barrel; that sold from $160-225
dependent on condition. The most rare in my area is the 6" barrel
length; and any "S&W Pre-model 10" would command a slight more
in price. If you would like, I will keep my eye out for one in really
good mechanical condition; and let you know what I find by PM?

BTW, most of the ones I have found lately come by way of bank
security details; having been carried a lot, and shot very little.
Some of the older security guards retire, and usually the bank
has upgraded their weaponary; so they in turn sell the old M&P's
to us, or trade 'em in on a 9m/m.

A lot depends on where you're at when it comes to local market conditions. (Note Ala Dan's comments). Internet auctions are often way overpriced, and I notice the seller's often don't get any bids. As a rule of thumb, the longer 5 and 6 inch barrel lengths are less popular then the shorter 2 and 4 inch ones.

While there are exceptions, most of the long-action/round butt Military & Police revolvers were made before World War Two. These are being discovered by collectors as well as shooters, and that's driving prices up. If you want a shooter with a good bore and in good shape expect a price between $250 and $350 - unless you get lucky. That last time that happened to me it was at a pawn shop, but in this area that seldom happens.

If you are very lucky you may find one that's finish worn, but has a clean barrel and chambers - and locks up like a bank vault. That would be your $200 or less revolver.

You might watch (www.armchairgunshow.com) sometimes expensive but always dependable.

R.M.Vivas is a member of the S&W forum who posts there frequently and has a very good reputation. This particular picture is of one cache of revolvers he bought from a New York security firm last year. Many have been liquidated, but he always has some at great prices. They are a small family outfit. They don't update frequently, but they have a line on almost anything. They have a lot of stock that sells before they can add it to the website. They are honest, and know their stuff. They won't send you a Model 10 if you ask for a transitional M&P. Give them a call in the AM and see if they have what you want. It couldn't hurt.

Well I called him this morning and have a nice 1950's M&P with my name on it awaiting the arrival of my $$$ and FFL. Thanks for the help fellas!

Almost forgot. He's also going to be on the lookout for a victory for me and call when he finds one. We talked for about 20 min. or so. Couldn't hope to find a nicer guy!

I bought a well worn ex-NYPD M&P from them right after Christmas. The gun was exactly as advertised. I found them good people to deal with.

Now if they'd just get in some Official Polices as in the picture...

Mr. billhilly, you don't know what you've got yourself into - older S&W's are about as addictive as crack, there is no known cure and the more you buy and learn about them the more you want.

I've been beyond hope for a while now. It started with Mausers but apparently, they are just a “gateway gun” because I soon developed a 1911 habit which somehow led to a model 70 CRF habit.
