Are those model 10's considered a k frame? ie, would my Safariland Comp 3's work on an old model 10? if so, this may be what I'm looking for in an IDPA gun....

Justin the M&P (later the Model 10) is indeed the original K Frame. Also, yes, all .38 & .357 Ks will use the same speedloaders.

Now for an IDPA gun you might want to look at a K-38 Combat Masterpiece. The K-38 started life as a long barreled target revolver with Patridge type front blade and micro click adjustable rear. It was known as the K-38 Target Masterpiece. Soon after the FBI, LAPD and others wished for a modified version that was more suited to duty use.

S&W made their dreams come true by keeping the adjustable rear sight, shortening the bbl, and adding a Baughman style ramped front sight that wouldn't catch on a holster under rapid draw. Thus the K-38 Combat Masterpiece was born. The Target guns became the Model 14 and the Combat guns the Model 15 (though there are custom ordered 14s and 15s which have the bbl and sight options of the other). The M15 was the standard issue sidearm of the LAPD for many years.

For IDPA use I'd look for a nice M15 (or it's stainless version the M67) with their clearer and easier to aquire sight picture. A later M10 with heavy bbl. and wider front ramp would still be a step above the early M10s with their narrow half moon front sights.

Hopefully that all helps. Billhilly sorry to add more fuel to the addiction  by answering Justin's question.

Thanks for the info. I've got an old model 19-4 that I'm using right now, but it was my grandfather's pistol, and I would hate for something to happen to it. I've got the IDPA setup for it, but I want something I'm a little less attached to to carry to competitions and abuse and such.
