My initial reaction is the Model 19 for shooting, but the Model 13 seems to be less common, and fixed sights are my preference for carry. To make a choice, I would have to know the barrel lengths, each gun's finish and condition, and your intended use for the revolver. Also, what are the dash numbers? That's always pertinent on a .357 magnum, as it tells whether the gun is P&R.
which is in better condition?
which is older?
do you prefer fixed sights or adjustable sights?
are they the same barrel length, and if not, which do you prefer?
answer those questions, and you'll have your answer...
I'd go with the one in better condition. If they're both in good shape, and 4" or 6" barrels, I'd prefer the 19 with adjustable sights so I can shoot different loadings (either .38 or .357) to POA. If snubbie, it'd probably be a better carry gun, so I'd probably be thinking of it in terms of a largely defense gun, so I'd go with the 13 with fixed sights.
Bruce,
You're asking us to pick between a leggy brunette & a classy blonde. Are you going for a weekend in Vegas or Thanksgiving with the relatives? Come on Buddy, we're FULL of opinons and can rationalize almost ANYTHING! But we need some gun details and application info.
That having been said...I'll pick the brunette, the M19 & I'm going to Vegas!
I agree with everything suggested. However, i'll take the Blond, Model 13, for Thanksgiving Dinner. I'm looking for someone who can cook.
I'm personally more of a fixed sight fan. Thus the model 13. I just picked up a mint 4" model 13 at a gun show. 13-1. Pinned and Recessed. Can't really judge the price. I traded a mint 7" Ruger blackhawk 45lc plus $25 for it. based on trade values of the blackhawk, I would say that in cash, the Model 13 was about $375. I saw a good model 19 there also, but there's something I like about the fixed site model 13. Later... Mike...
S&W 13 ALL THE WAY, Particularly if it is a 13 -1 or -2 and a 3" barrel.
Which ever one is not nickle.
unless it is a S&W 19 with a 3" barrel and round grip.
I much prefer the fixed sights, too, but I passed some sort of line where I can't see the things anymore. The adjustable sights option on almost any short gun usually produces a sight picture I can pick up, so I've veered into those sorts of sights more and more.
Like it or not, I'd be going with the 19.
Fortunately, I really like 19s.
Bill
Range use and/or gun games, or duty carry? Model 19, especially if it is a 4" barrel.
CCW? Model 13, especially if it is a 3" barrel.
Either one will double for the other in a pinch, so it's not like you're out of luck if you have to cross-train. For flexibility, I'd go with the 13. It's a very sweet gun.
As a younger man I always lusted after brunettes. I spent many hours pursuing them, but for some reason I always ended up with the nice, conservative, take home to mom, blonde. I finally gave up and married a blonde. Now this brings up an interesting point...........what? Oh you mean...oh I understand. Get the model 13. It will make a good reliable companion.
I concur with the learned faithful here at THR that said revolvers may well be the finest handguns ever made. Now, go forth and bring that beauty home or send me the info on how I may acquire it.
I have a M13 in 3 inch and love it and a M19 in 2 1/2 inch and also love it but the adjustable sights sometimes tears my shirt when I am drawing it. Steve48
I just bought a 13-2 4" and am looking forward to shooting it this weekend . I was wondering what these go for normally price wise? and to double check where do you measure from for barrel length?
Hard to beat a Model 13...I bought mine a three years ago and have not seen one like it since! I see plenty of 19s in various barrel lengths.
Your choice, but at least it's between two very nice .357s
Here's mine, a dash two...bought it LNIB at Cabela's for $250 out the door...they must have been sleeping that day.
Possessing a Model 66, I would go for the Model 19, the blue steel version of the 66. I think the sights make the difference, and I would go for a longer barrel unless you are using it concealed, in which case, if you can get either in a short barrel, get it.
Having been issued both in short barrel persuasion, it is a hard call. I was issued the 19 first and liked the adjustable sights for the different loads. Later the Heavy barrel and full length extraction of the 13 seemed better . I concealed both using the same holster. Today I only have the Nickle 19 snub, and it and the 13 (which I'd like to have)are too heavy and bulky for this old man to CCW.
Don't buy either unless your paid to carry A firearm.
I have A 13 clone by the bed, A S&W 65. To heavy and big to CCW and not right for gun games.
The Model 19 falls under the same rules. I have been beat by good shooters with A K Frame. Its just right with the right rules.
Its to bad some of our gun games have rules that limit our fun.
