what can you tell me about the model 19 with a 3" barrel
would this make a good ccw revolver im looking at a blued used one
or would a Ruger GP100 be a better gun

Are you sure of the barrel length? It should be measured from the face of the cylinder to the muzzle.

A 3" model 19 would be an uncommon specimen and a fine fine carry gun.

Those are pretty uncommon. Most went to a special order for the Peruvian State Police or something.

A few overruns escaped into the states. Do some research and consider grabbing it.

There are lots of Gp100s but there ain't many 3 " 19s.

Depending on price and condition, you might wind up with some bodacious trading material, not to mention a fine carrying gun.

IMO A short barrel M19 would be heads above the GP100 as a CC revolver. It's lighter and more narrow so it will conceal better. If the price is right jump on it!

The three inch ejector rod should cleanly remove all empties, the 2.5 inch not so much, being a little shorter.
I'd buy a three inch just to have trade fodder - some collector will want it.

Best choice for a 357 Magnum revolver for CCW. There are a few 3 inchers out there but they are kind of rare. At one time the issue firearm for the FBI was a 3 inch M65.

3" models 65 & 13 are uncommon, while 3" models 66s are rare, and 3" model 19s are very rare. CCW aside, then, if it's a genuine 3" 19, and you can get it for anything under $1k, by God, grab it.

Correct - I intentionally included the term "genuine" in the event it's being sold (and priced) as a 3" M19.

First, make sure you're really looking at a 3" barrel, not 2 1/2" or 3 1/4". If so, make sure the barrel's not been cut to that length and it has the correct front sight. A little research will go a long way here.

'Course, even a standard M19 cut to 3" would make a fine carry piece, IMO, but it ought to be priced accordingly.

I have a 4-inch Model 19-5 that I bought about 25 years ago. Its still my "go to" home defense gun. The only thing I have done to it is replace the beautiful wood grips with Crimson Trace laser grips. But I think it is far too big for concealed carry. I don't get to carry often since I live in IL and only carry when out of state, but when I do its either a S&W640 (concealed hammer, 2 inch barrel, DAO) or my little Ruger LCP. The 640 has only 5 rounds but I have 100% confidence it will go bang when I pull that long trigger pull. I have a N2 Tactical IWB holster that is comfortable and holds the gun well.

Depends a lot on condition and also to a certain extent on your local market. I think 400.00ish either way depending on condition is what I see.

P.S. My take on the choice is GP100 for 125 gr fire breathers and hands down the 19 for mostly .38 spl and occasional 158 gr "standard" magnums. I think you would find a consensus for that opinion.

LUCKYDAWG13, IF the M-19 you are looking at is really a factory 3" version it's worth semi-big bucks. There were fewer 3" M-19's produced than registered magnums. One respected old time S&W collector bid on one several years ago and his,personal, high bid of $2,500.00 was not enough to win the auction.

I'm attaching a photo of a 3" M-19, compare it to the one you are looking at. If you have locate a 3" M-19 buy the thing.

^ The barrel on the revolver in the above link looks longer than three inches to me. Look how much barrel extends beyond the ejector shroud. Compare it to the picture oldbear posted above.

Yup, that sure looks like a 4" to me and it priced higher than a cat's back for a gun in that condition.

There is a big difference between a model 19-3 , and a model 19 with a 3 inch barrel. The picture is of a 4 inch barrel gun .

Yes, the model 19's or 66's in 4" are all good carry guns....



I have a couple of 2 1/2" guns in both the model 19's and 66's as well....but in the photo above....guns at right are a pair of model 19's in Nickel ( both 4") ..and then a pair of model 66's in stainless - both 4" as well. / guns on the left are N and L frame ( model 27 blued / and a model 686 stainless both 6" guns )....I like .357 mag S&W revolvers...

From time to time...I will carry one of the 4" ( all .357 mag's ) in an IWB Kramer horsehide holster with a forward FBI tilt...

well guys that 3" model 19 turned out to be a 2 1/2" barrel
model 19 still a nice revolver but i passed price was is $499
think im just try and find a 3" sp101 thank you all for the schooling

That's too bad. I have a 2002 issue of Guns magazine with an article by Sheriff Jim Wilson. He writes about some of his favorite personal revolvers. One of those revolvers is (possibly was all these years later) a 3" Model 66. Very nice and made me want one. But after a couple years I came to realize that the 3" models were out of my price range. Waaayyyy out of my price range. Oh well.
