S&W MP 15-22 thoughts?

I would like to get into ARs but don't have the money to drop on a full-size rifle. Was looking to familiarize myself with this rifle as it has the proper controls laid out unlike the Ruger or Mossberg platforms.

How is the reliability, accuracy, quality, plastic parts etc. for these rifles? Do all aftermarket AR accessories fit? How is takedown for cleaning? Are extra mags expensive?

15-22 is a superb choice, and very we'll balances .22 rifle, with AR function and form. It takes a lot of AR parts, and is well made (unlike the colt AR .22). Cleaning is very easy, push out the rear take down pin, be it hinges open like an AR, everything is laid out like one, you just don't have a buffer tube to deal with. Pop out the front takedown pin, and you have a seperated upper and lower reciever (note S&W changed sizes to keep people from mounting an AR uppe or lower and possibly getting hurt).

I loved the light weight of it, I think it would make a great hunting rifle. The magazines are fairly cheap and easy to work with, just get at least 1 shot 10 rounder for bench shooting work.

I you get the model with iron sights, they are AR standard, and the front sight post is too fat for my liking, so get a replacement one that is much thinner.

I very much regret selling mine, and will buy it again if I get a center fire AR.

It's much nicer than the Mossberg offering for sure. Haven't had much time with the Ruger, just a quick peek.

Generally, it operates and disassembles like an AR.

The rails are polymer and accept piccatinny accessories.

To fit a magpul B. A. D. Lever the lower will need a little grinding for clearance.

The rifle flexes a little so you need to hold it the same way for each shot.

Magazines are not expensive normally, but in this current frenzy they probably are.

That's probably more a function on the ammo over the barrel. Low quality ammo might give 6 MOA, whereas target ammo probably will give you sub moa.

I have the basic stock standard model w/flash hider. I have done no mods whatsoever to it and am getting excellent accuracy with Federal Bulk Pack ammo and outstanding accuracy with 40gr Minimags. Outstanding as in .5" @ 50 yards.

Handgrip an buttstock are basic, but very similar to milspec. Magpul version value is up to you.

My guess is you can't find either model or magazines for suggested retail pricing or less.

My thoughts.

They make 3 versions, a standard model with iron sights and a flash hider. A version with no flash hider made for states still under an AWB. And a 3rd version with no iron sights and a target grade barrel.

I have a standard version. Accuracy is on par with my standard 10-22's, meaning around 1" groups at 50 yards with good ammo and a scope. I bought a few 10 round mags for mine simply because I find the longer mags get in the way. Same reason I prefer 20 round mags in my AR's. The factory 10 round mags extend about the same distance as a 20 round AR mag since they are single stack. That is just personel preference, all mags and the gun work perfectly.

I have a 2-7 scope in QD mounts and keep the rear sight attched to the rail under the barrel. i can quickly go back and forth between irons or optics. So far I like it quite a bit. Realistically it doesn't do anything a 10-22 doesn't do for less money. Hi-cap mags are available for both, and I've found both to be equally reliable and accurate. But I like it, and that is reason enough to buy one.

I've found mine to be on par with my 10-22 as far as accuracy and reliability. It's a fun gun and a great way to shoot an AR pattern if that's what you want. If I'm going to take a gun hunting, I'm probably still doing to reach for my 10-22, but that's just my personal preference.

I think it will be a great fit for what you are trying to do. I find mine to be more accurate than I am to the point I'm considering putting a better trigger in mine. If you like the MOE stuff and can find one, go for it. I bought the "regular" model and put a different Magpul stock on mine (ACS-L) because i like the friction lock clamping the stock down tight. It takes any mil-spec size stock.

My local Wal-mart has had at least two come through since Christmas so hopefully you can still find one at a reasonable price. Good luck.

It is accurate: It shoots 1 inch at 50 yards, head shoots squirrels at 30-40 yards. I shot a practical rifle match with it and won.

So far it has fed all ammo i've put in it. I must have tried 20 different types. 36 and 40gr. Lead heads, copper jacket, high vel, low vel, etc. I have seen a friend's 15-22 have slight issues with some cheap bulk he had. I don't recall the brand.

for other rails, there is a barrel nut to allow different rails. There are a few accessory manufacturers.

I bought two of the 15-22's last week. I'm delighted with them. If you can find one get it.
Mags are in non existent supply right now...they come with one only. I managed to scrounge up two more last week direct from S&W but they are out of stock right now as are ALL the online suppliers.

Love mine - I got the original which has no flash hider and iron sights days after it came out. Threw a Vortex Strikefire red dot sight on there. It's a lot of fun.

I bought one two weeks ago. I finally shot it this weekend. It functioned 100%. Quite accurate. I installed my slide fire stock to it and had a lot of fun. Slide fire reccomends a lighter trigger, but it worked fairly well at delivering short bursts of 5-8 rounds. Overall it was a good buy.

They are kind of heavy and chubby. It is a 10/22 in different clothing.

I absolutely love my 10/22 in an M1 carbine stock (with tech-sights), but the receiver and such isn't the greatest in an AR platform. The S&W was designed from the ground up to be in an AR platform, and is a great hybrid of AR and conventional 22.

The 10/22 has the advantage of aftermarket parts usually, but the 15/22 fits AR triggers, stocks, grips, so it is really a tie there.

A buddy of mine has one...tons of fun, accurate and reliable. He can't shoot it anymore though because there is no more .22 ammo to be found. It makes a good conversation piece as a door-stop though.

did you do anything to it to get the slide fire stock to work. I tried my slide fire stock on may ar22 smith and couldnt get even two rounds in a row to go off.

I used the slide fire on my 15-22 bone stock. I watched a guy shoot one with a slide fire on YouTube and copied him. He held the gun up with the index finger of his off hand on the front lip of the mag well, and the thumb wrapped around the magazine, lightly pushing forward. Slidefire on their website reccomends and sells (for $179)a 3.5# drop in trigger, so that is my next step. For longer bursts

My 15-22 is a Talo edition with some upgrades, including a supposed match-grade barrel. It is so much fun to shoot, and accurate beyond me, I recently upgraded the buttstock to a milspec Magpul CTR and the grip to a MOE+.

Anyway, I bought it for around $420 before the present situation. I saw a Performance Center (PC) model at a gunshow in Portland, OR a couple weeks ago and was very, very tempted to buy it at $675 OTD, it had some very nice upgrades over the stock model. If the NICS checks weren't taking over 2 hours I probably would have snagged one.

I have heard there is a difference in the PC models with the chamber to where they are finicky about ammo. Mine eats anything and everything, I'm happy with it.

The S&W M&P-22 is an excellent choice. The best IMHO the controls are identical to an AR-15 and the collapsible stock makes it short enough for kids to handle.

I picked up two of them at different Walmarts last week. $447 ea. You can check online to see which WalMarts have them in stock.

I bought one last week. Unfortunately due to a busy work schedule I haven't had a chance to get to the range which I am itching to do! I got it at a local gun store for 479 dollars which was actually cheaper than they were last year when I was thinking about getting one. The guy at the store said they have 3 and wont be able to get more for at least 6 months so I should get it if I want it. That's all the convincing it took plus I can shoot 22 imdoors at the club and winters in Maine are cold.
