Can anybody explain what the suffix codes on S&W Sigma series of pistols means? Like 40"F", 40"VE" 9"C". Thanks, Steve

One has always needed to have a special decoder ring to decipher S&W's model designations. I looked on their website and I can't figure it our either. I used to understand the numbers in their old steel and aluminum frame autos, but I can't figure these.

You can probably get an answer over on the smith and wesson forum site. I have a 9ve and a 40ve but have no clue about the designations. BTW, I have a bunch of handguns suitable for concealed carry but I'm wearing the Sigma 9mm.

I have that decoder ring - SCSW 3rd Ed. by Supica & Nahas.

F - First gen full size with black melonite slide
C - First gen compact with black melonite slide
P - First gen ported with black melonite stainless slide that has polished flats
V - First gen "value series" with pale grey frame and matte stainless slide
VB - First gen value series with black frame & slide
E - Enhanced series (second gen) with black melonite slide
G - Prefix to E & VE models denotes green frame
VE - Value Series Enhanced (3rd gen) - black or green frame with matte stainless slide
VE Allied Forces - VE with black frame & black melonite slide

Was looking on the Smith and Wesson forum and found:

All first generations had 4.5 inch barrels and no accessory rails.
Second generation guns had 4 inch bbls and no accessory rails.
Third generation guns had 4 inch bbls and included accessory rails.

BTW, there was a short run in either second or third generation in .357 sig caliber

The first generation SW9Cs had 4" bbls as well. The 357 Sig model was the second gen SW357V.
