Anybody have an opinion on these two guns? I want a S&W SigmaVE 40 cal, but is it worth an extra $150 for the S&W M&P 40 cal?

The M&P is worth the cost increase over the Sigma.

The difference is that the Sigma is not a well made or engineered weapon and the M&P is.
Without a doubt the M&P is worth it and right now the M&P is on sale at Bud's for $439 shipped AND Smith has a rebate on it till the end of April for $50 back and two free magazines. Buying a Sigma would be a real mistake.

I had the Sigma SW9VE, still have the M&P .40 - After buying the Sigma, I wished I had saved a little more for the M&P. I sold the Sigma to help pay for the M&P. Save money in the first place and get the M&P, IMO.

People keep badmouthing the Sigma. While owners will admit it has a heavy trigger - think heavy DA revolver - they will also quickly say the Sigma has two big pluses: One, ergonomics - it feels great and points great. Two, it flat runs. Load it with whatever you want and it'll go bang.

I love my M&P and M&Pc. they are fantastic. The Sigmas I have held and the one sigma that I shot were just...lower grade guns. They work. They are reliable, and accurate enough for combat. But they are not the smooth, finely made guns that the M&Ps are.
I'd feel well armed carrying either one into a gun fight. But the M&P is just in a different league.

I have a Sigma. The accuracy and reliability are fantastic. You'd be hard pressed to find a difference between the Sigma and M&P as far as accuracy and reliability.
Where you WILL notice the difference is in the fit and finish, and the trigger. For a reliable gun on a tight budget, the Sigma is a great choice. If you plan on shooting a lot, or can afford the price difference, then I'd say go for the M&P.

Nothing wrong with the Sigma (except the trigger). I love my M&P, though

My SW40VE has been absolutely flawless over the year I've owned it. Eats everything I feed it including reloads. Has NEVER failed to extract, feed, or fire. I bought mine for the price but do not believe I could buy better for the money. I did not feel the added $150+ for anything else was justified.
The trigger on mine is no worse than my Ruger Security-Six in double action. Those people that bad mouth these pistols usually have never owned or operated one. I shoot IDPA with mine and never feel it's a handicap.

I already have a Kel-Tec P11 with an 8.5lb pull that keeps my finger plenty strong
+1 Inexpensive so I don't feel nervous about anything happening to it, it's my one gun that could get a gouge in the slide or frame and I'd say "oh well".
It is also superbly reliable. I don't see how an M&P could be any more reliable than my Sigma. The M&P is much nicer though, and the Sigma does stretch the fingers.

SW40VE is what I've finally decided to carry.
I love the 1911 with a full size barrel but I've seen even the best 1911s with three inch barrels jam often enough that I don't want to bet my life on one without back up. Since I don't want 9mm, and I want an autoloader for normal carry, the S&W is the perfect blend of ergonomics, short profile, and dependability for me.
Almost decided on a Glock 27, pug ugly, but nice. It would be great if Glock didn't insist on making a one-size-fits-all grip that only fits if you have small hands, so I said the heck with spending the extra 160 bucks.
As far as trigger pull on the SW40VE, yep, 12 and half pounds, and there is nothing you can do to change it. I don't care, I've got big hands and 195 lbs of grip strength, I don't find the trigger pull excessive. I do like that, like all Smiths I've tried, the trigger pull is nice and consistent from start to finish, unlike some other's I've looked at, mainly Taurus, though I am not against that brand as a whole, and love the PT1911.

I had a SW40VE. If you can afford it, get an M&P. If you go with the Sigma, be aware that there is a connector spring attached to the trigger assembly which has a small piece of felt cloth in it. You must keep that moist with oil or else it will dry out and tear during firing. It's not a huge deal, just something you need to keep in mind.

I think you will enjoy the M&P. It is a great gun. I'm proud of Smith & Wesson, they did a great job designing this line of pistols.
Owning a sigma 9mm and wanting to like it more than the M&P I still like the M&P. There's nothing wrong with a sigma if you can learn to use the trigger. The MP is just nice to shoot rather easy trigger. All together I would say the MP is well worth the price increase.

I never pass up an opportunity to bad-mouth a Sigma. My .40 was so picky out of the box, I had to have the feed ramp milled. The front sight fell out. Just my bad luck right? Or, more likely, it explains the price difference. This industry is too competitive for second chances. If confronted with necessity, I would use the Sigma long enough to acquire another gun. Then I would use it as a choc-block.
