I just stumbled across these and simply find it unbelievable (literally; I don't believe it).

At Gunbroker, there's an auction for saboted 7.62x39 cartridges (saboted to .22 caliber). The seller claims velocities of 4,500 FPS from an AK or SKS.
This reeks extreme exaggeration (read BS) to me, but I just wanted to run this through the collective before I settled on that conclusion.

The link to this auction is included.

For awhile you could buy "Accelerator" rounds for the .30-06. They cranked out a saboted .22 bullet at an advertised 4080fps.

[sarcasm]Somehow I suspect that you'd get a little less velocity from the 7.62x39 than from the 30-06.[/sarcasm]

Armor-piercing Incendiary Explosive 7.62x39?

Does he load this stuff himself or what?
I must say that I'm intrigued....

Ok, I'm done researching ammunition oddities. I just never knew this kind of stuff existed. Maybe it doesn't.

BTW, he also sells teflon-impregnated tungsten-core 5.56 NATO ammunition if anyone's interested. ;)

I don't see how you would get any type of accuracy....
These guys have been doing the same thing with 7.62x25 pistol ammo for a while now.

IIRC, accuracy isn't too bad with these (there was a writeup in one of the mags sometime this past year). I've seen some handloaders post here and there with attemps to reproduce this at home though and didn't get very good accuracy at all. I guess there's an art to it.

Have tried sabated 7.62x39 rounds bought a gunshow awhile back (bout 7 years). They got around 2840 fps from sks and were slightly more accurate then standard military rounds tried. These rounds were home brewed, not commercial. They functioned fine.

My math says that you would need about 2900 ft-lbs to drive 65 grains (55-gr bullet + sabot) at 4500 FPS. Since 7.62x39 is only around 1500 or so ft-lbs, I'd say he's full of it. Or his chrony is broken.
-And I dunno what the sabot weighs, I just guessed 10 grains--but the final figure isn't gonna be far from 2900.
....
You would need a total projectile weight (bullet+sabot) of =<33 grains to get that speed with only 1500 ft-lbs behind it, 1500 being what a 7.62x39 has. A 25-gr .17 Remington w/sabot might just about hit it.

I've used many rounds of .30-30 and .30-06 Accelerators. They definitely leave the barrel steppin' lively! It's interesting that you really can sense a difference in bullet travel time, even though the actual difference in time-on-target is only a few hundreths of a second.

I dunno...

Somehow anyone that strings a bunch of unrelated words and acronyms
pre-ban colt ruger smith and wesson barrett state arms ap api steel core armor piercing incendiary
at the end of their auction description just sets off the BS-o-Meter. :scrutiny:

he adds those names to the end, so that when you do a search for anyofe those words his ad wll still come up.

I might believe 3,500 ft/sec, but 4,500? Anybody know if this guy also has any good cash deals on bridges?

How do you get 500 ft/sec faster from that cartridge case, over an '06 case? Magic Woofle Dust instead of gunpowder?

:D, Art
