I'm looking for a new holster for when I carry a woods gun, such as a Glock 20. Using an IWB holster with a heavier gun while hiking causes me back pain, so I'm looking for an alternative. I've used a waist pack I picked up at Cabelas which works ok, but I'm looking for something a little more comfortable.

I came across a Safepacker Holster from The Wilderness. Has anyone used this, especially when hiking? My primary concern is how it supports the weight of a heavier gun, how comfortable it is when on extended hikes and if anyone's experienced back pain when using it.

I have two Safepackers. They're the best option I've found for concealed carry whilst hiking. And I also use one every work-day, with the shoulder strap, for commuting. It then protects the gun and ammo from temperature changes whilst in my vehicle.

For hiking, I've found it best to put the Safepacker on the waist belt of my pack, and keep the shoulder strap loose. When I take the pack off, the gun stays on me. I've also worn it directly on my belt when I choose a small pack with no waist belt. It's pretty comfortable either way.

I also was wearing one when I rolled a canoe in shallow water and got completely submerged. I stood straight up as soon as I got my feet under me; the gun was barely wet, whilst everything else was soaked. And they do a good job of protecting a gun from rain, snow, and dirt.

Not a particularly quick draw (the larger the Safepacker, the more flap you have to move), but I've carried a few semi-autos and revolvers (including a 5.5" barreled Redhawk) quite comfortably on some longer day hikes (10-15 miles). A downside for autos is that if you carry a spare magazine in with the gun, it's on the wrong side for grabbing to reload. But if on your pants belt, it's easier carrying to reduce the weight on that side by keeping your spare mag elsewhere.

I looked at a few options and wound up getting the Tactical Tailor Lunar Concealed Carry Pouch. Partly I went with them because they're local and I like to support local small business, but it's also just been a handy bag. I put a small knife, pen, and flashlight in the outside pouch and wear it on my belt.

Thanks. That looks like a great option at a great price.
