Safes I'm considering....

Here are my options...

1. Sentry safe R3920 $349 + tax(in Texas)
Pros: fits in closet, least expensive, hidden hinges, looks decent, can be bolted down

Cons: unproven lock mechanism, no fire resistance

2, American Eagle by Cannon $599 +tax & delivery
Pros: Heavier than the Sentry by 200 lbs, hidden hinges, looks decent, can be bolted down, better fit and finish than Sentry, better locking system, fire resistant rating
Cons: Won't fit in a closet.

3. Redhead from Bass Pro $720 + tax and delivery
Pros: Heavier than the Cannon safe, looks decent, can be bolted down, heavier gauge steel than the Cannon, better fit and finish than the Cannon, similar fire resistant rating as Cannon, comparable locking system as Cannon
Cons: Won't fit in a closet, costs more than the Cannon safe

4. Winchester $799 at Sam's
Similar to Redhead, but has a glossy paint job.


The delivery charge for the Cannon, Winchester and Redhead will be about the same. I could probably muscle the Sentry home with help from my sons.

This is a subject I know well, first Sentry is a joke!

The other two are ok, but if you want a real safe try AMSEC (American Security Products Company) they are a real safe company and offer containers in three basic grades from heavy fire and burglary protection to medium duty units. These safes are tried and tested with UL rated group ll locks backed up with hardplate for drill protection with fire ratings from class 350 one hour to class 350 30 min. Tex if you want real protection this would be a far better way to go, needless to say they will cost more. Should you have any more questions just ask!

Cannon makes a good safe. I have an American Security safe as well and am very happy with it.

Fireproof is a good thing, as is bolting it down. Cosmetics are a personal choice.

I'm assuming the safe you're looking at is larger than you think you'll ever need, right? If not, as I'm the guy with the full safe and nowhere to store more guns: trust me, buy a bigger one!

I have to third the American Security Safe comment. When I was looking at safes I found that I could purchase more safe for the money going with a AMSEC safe. They aren't as pretty but they are a better safe.

LarryW is VERY right buy as big a safe as you can afford, can fit
and you can safely get into your house. I now own two safes and will soon need another one.

I may have to downsize the safe. I want it to fit into a closet and not be out in the open so people see it. Since I don't own any long guns right now, I could go for one of the smaller gun safes or go for more of a general purpose home security/fire safes. Suggestions?

I have an American Eagle safe. I paid around $700 for it. It was a real chore getting it in the house. Weighs about 425 lbs. empty. Fireproof, lifetime warranty. If the safe is damaged by someone trying to break into it, Cannon will repair it at no charge. I believe the capacity is 18 long guns. I just lay pistols down on the top shelf. Good safe for the money in my opinion.

I think I have the same Sentry safe you are looking at. Got it at Home Depot for 347 in NY. It isn't great but it is ok for what it is. It will keep most thieves honest if it is bolted down. Mine is fastend to concrete with Tapcons. It offers no fire protection but I believe fire protection is a farce. If there is a fire and it gets to the room your safe is in unless it's top notch your stuff is gone. I bought this safe just to deter (pardon spelling) most thieves. Also if my guns are stolen I made an honest effort in protecting them. So it will be hard for my permit to be revoked if my guns are stolen. That was my only concern. Just remember any determined thief can defeat any lock.

A good safe will provide peace of mind but even that can be improved. My fire res safe is bolted down and supported with steel framing from below the floor. also have large toothy dog, security system with motion sensing and heat/fire sensing and will soon have fire suppression in some select areas of the house. I sleep well and I don't worry much when I leave the homestead.
