I just got my Saiga 12 and I am trying to figure out if it has 2 holes or 4. I have field stripped the gun and can see down the gas tube, but where am I supposed to look for the holes? An explanation would be great. A picture would be amazing. Thanks!

You will need to use a dental pick or paper clip stretch out to feel for the holes. Also look in the barrel if you only see 2 holes because you could have a 3 hole or 4 hole but they are covered by the gas block. According to RAA 3 holes is the new design. Check close to the forward edge for holes because many times they are right up against the forward edge where you can't see them. Also not that is generally takes 100 rounds before a Saiga is properly broke it as much of the internal are painted and the parts need to get polished up. Some people speed up the process by polishing parts.

Mine only has 2 and functions w/o a problem.....I emailed RAA and they tol me that they're makin' 'em w/2 and 3 holes now and all should function fine....

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Mine needed setting "2" to function at all initially. After some use and a good cleaning everything (3" 000 buck & #7.5 "dove" promo low brass) functioned on setting "1" last time out.

Mine did not function with low brass 100% of the time, it was a stove pipe machine. I guess I could have waited and see how it progressed but I wanted it properly vented and RAA was footing the bill. The fewer holes the more picky they get about being clean and what not.

I understand that is the story that RAA is using now but before it was that the 2 holes were a special order for the russian military that got sent here by mistake, Clyde at RAA told me that one. I doubt there will be any more 2 holes seen going forward after they clear out the inventory.

CGW agreed to convert mine and RAA agreed to fix it and ship it for free so I figured I might as well get it fixed. I would rather have the proper specified amount of gas vents than just enough. You guys with 2 may actually have 3 or 4, they can be up at the edge of the gas block and they angle forward and impossible to see from above. You need to feel them or look in the barrel.

They can function with 2 holes but the general consensus is that if you have a problem RAA were replacing them or fixing them and paying shipping so it must have been considered an issue even though they may be pushing back now.
