Hi all,

I'm considering picking up a Saiga in 308 and I was wondering if anyone ever had one modified to take some more popular mags. I understand that Krebs modifies VEPRs to take M14 mags and I started to wonder. I assume that it would need a few more changes to make it legal being an import and all that, but can it even be done legaly? Who knows what NJ will think about it, but I am curious about federal legalities.

Also, I know that it is not quite the same shape as other AK's and that it wont take standard furniture, but how about the scout type gas tube mounted bases? Is the gas tube the same or different?

Lastly, anyone know anything about the Saiga 100's? They seem to be a different shape and they look better to me (at least from the really crappy EAA picture). Does anyone actualy have them for sale?

Thanx
Loch

Are you talking about the scout mount that replaces the upper handguard? If so, that will not work with the Saiga's 1-piece handguard without modification. I'm not sure about the gas tube, though.

If you don't install the required amount of US-made parts, I would stick to the original Saiga magazines because you will be restricted to 10 rounds or less, and quality M14 and Galil magazines are expensive.

Just in case it's not clear. Saiga .308 mags hold 8 rounds, not 10 round.

Although Saiga mags come as 8 rounders from the factory,

they can be easily modified to hold 10 rounds (and feed them reliably) by trimming the follower.
