Hey Guys, quick question that I have been thinking about for quite some time now. Would it be legal to convert a Saiga in CT? Also if so, would I be able to chamber it in 7.62(x39) or would I have to still stay with .223? or 5.45x39? I'm sure I could comply with the assault weapons bans and 922r compliance but where does the law say "NO" to Saiga conversions, or does it? The law does say that AK type rifles will no be allowed but I talked to a gunsmith with his FFL and he explained that You can get an Ak but it must be chambered in anything but 7.62. Is this correct? If so with out a forarm conversion, for now, how cheap do you think I could build one?
Why can't we now take a look at the CT assault weapons ban, now that heller is out of the way?

I don't see how it being a Saiga, or the calibre, has anything to do with it. I say , get the cal you want, do the conversion, stay compliant with the parts, and you should be good to go.

I'd say it cost me ~$200 to convert my Saiga, but I used pretty good parts like the K-VAR Warsaw stock and Dinzag's bullet guide kit and slicked up G2 trigger.

Not sure on CT laws, might want to ask here.

I strongly suggest you call up either the attorney generals office or the state police. It's there job to know and enforce the law.

Internet advice is worth less than what you pay for it....and in this kind of situation could get you into trouble you don't want to be in.

I can't find the statute, but here in CT you basically can't have an AK-47 or clone in 7.62X39. You can, however, have it in any other caliber, as long as the rifle meets the "one evil feature" rule.

The Connecticut Assault Weapons ban would most likely be considered a reasonable restriction, since it is only a ban on some firearms with in a class, not an entire class. We can still own semi automatic rifles, even most semi-automatic military type rifles. You would be very hard pressed to show that a class of firearms is being banned when it is firearms equipped with enumerated accessories (threading, bayonet lugs, telestocks, grenade launchers) that are banned.

If it is a rifle, you are g2g as long as you comply with the features ban, and it is not in 7.62x39.

However, I can't fathom any worthwhile Saiga shotgun conversion that wouldn't be illegal here under the shotgun features ban.

... I agree witht the advice of SSN but before I even thought about the idea any harder I wanted to know if anyone on the web might know. Currently I dont have the funds but I was going to start the project in the near future.

Ok so why couldn't I get it in 7.62? Because thats the law?... I could get any other rifle in 7.62 but not a saiga? Wouldn't that mean that Saiga is a clone (by CT definition)? Because If not there wouldnt be a problem right?

The Saiga-12 looked tempting but CT laws would make it nearly impossible to build.
Organ donor- thank you for your input on all of my "CT" threads:)

SIDE NOTE- Any one know if the Saigas eat up wolf ammo? I found out the hard way my AR WILL NOT cycle properly using wolf. (Time to start reloading!)

Not to hijack the thread on a tangent, but how does your AR misbehave with the Wolf? My Bushmaster AR doesn't like to extract the Wolf casings, and I'm about to try to remedy that with the upgraded extractor setup.

Oh, and my Saigas (223 and x39) run fine on Wolf.
NICE..
My AR wont extract, it double feeds, I've had a couple FTF. I think it is the fact that they might be under or over powered all in the same box.

I was using brass surplus all day (100-150 rds;not much) then put in a magazine of wolf and the first round double feed. about 6 rds. after that it hit the primer but didnt go off, probably didnt go into battery.

And to answer the question:

Connecticut has a features ban similar to the ye olde federal AWB with the exception of no mag capacity limitations. Connecticut ALSO extends the ban to include AK style rifles in 7.62x39 (I believe the VZ-58 rifle is exempt, because it is NOT an AK-47 style rifle). Find the official form online, follow it to the letter. You can't go to jail for following the law.

You could build a .223 Saiga conversion with fixed stock and be legal.

I have a legal saiga .308 conversion in CT. As has been pointed out, .anything except 7.62 x 39 is not considered an "AK type" according to an opinion by I believe attorney general Blumenthal.
I got mine in CT at Hoffman's guns in newington.
You do have to comply with both 922r and the CT awb.
I realized after I visited Hoffman's that Saiga's are "ak type" firearms as far as I knew, and I called them about it, and they informed me about the non x39 exemption. I went back and snagged my .308 the next day.
