I have been thinking of adding a rifle to my meager arsenal. I was thinking of a general purpose gun, and thought about a Ruger 10/22. Then it occurred to me that I already have a .22lr Ruger semi/auto handgun. I have read in the past of people owning a handgun and longgun in the same caliber; maybe .357 or .44 magnum, etc. But I was thinking most of this was in years gone by-

Other than using the same ammunition, what are the benefits of this setup?

Thanks for your help!

A rifle and a pistol in 22LR is like Ice cream and cake, or milk and cookies, they just go together. Both cheap to shoot and the fundamentals apply whether shooting a .22 or a .30-06.

I've also got a .357 mag revolver and a Marlin 1894C lever gun. Man, you just can't go wrong with combos like that.

I've had a 9mm Ruger P89 for years, and have to say that I picked up a Hi-Point 995 carbine because it took the same ammo. Love the Hi-Point, btw - cheap as hell, but it's accurate and fun to shoot. I've since expanded to other calibers, both in pistols and rifles, but it is nice to be able to just bring one type of ammo with you, wherever you go.

25/20, 32/20, 38/40, 44/40. Not a new idea. All of these date from the 1800's.

My favorites are a 92 Win rifle and a Colt New Service in 38/40 (38WCF)

Puma M92 and a Colt SAA in 45 Colt

M94 Win Trapper and Ruger BlackHawk in 45 Colt

You could take it one step further and get a carbine and handgun that use the same mags. Like a S&W + Marlin Camp 9, Ruger P series handgun and a PC9, and possibly the Beretta 92 series and the Storm.

All my handguns and rifles/carbines shoot .22LR and 9mm. It makes it easy on me to manage ammo.

A Magnum Research BFR revolver in 45/70 on your hip with a Marlin 1895 slung over your shoulder would be a nice combo.

A good 357 combo is hard to beat. With a proper projectile, the 357 out of an 18" or longer barrel can rival a 30-30 out to 100 yards. 41 or 44 mag is even better.

Id get a marlin lever action 44 magnum. then get a 44 magnum handgun. or henry 45 colt. Then get a 45 colt handgun.

My home defense setup starts with a S&W 66 on the nightstand, followed by a Marlin 1894. Both are .357.

There are some real advantages to ammo compatibility. Furthermore, I'm more confident that the .357 won't overpenetrate as much as rifle-caliber stuff.

.22 is cheap and fun to shoot in long guns and handguns. If you're talking defensive use I think if you're going to use a long gun you might as well get all the benefits that come with shooting a real long gun round. Ymmv.

Would have to be on opposite sides other wise you would either fall over from the weight or walk in circles.

I would not call it a meager arsenal. To some it may be, but to others, it's not. Stand up and be proud.

Having the Ruger (everyone should have a .22 handgun) and having a 10/22 (everyone should have at least one .22 rifle) is probably the greatest way to get entrenched in practical shooting training.

Benefits? Affordable, economical, cheap, fun, practical, easy, quiet, easier, safer in some ways, variety, did I mention cheap and fun, easier on the shoulder, and cheap.

Those two guns will provide several lifetimes of service and create a rock solid foundation and platform to build your skills, training and arsenal for the rest of your shooting life.

Anschutz-rifle and Anschutz Exemplar-pistol .22LR.
Dan Wesson .357 Super Mag-revolver and T/C G2 14" .357 Rem Maximum with silencer-"carbine". Lucking for real carbine or rifle .357 Rem Max.

Exactly Why I am waiting for Hi-Point to release their .45ACP carbine...I already have 2 1911-A1's and a KP-90 Ruger.

OK, everbody line up to kick Foggy's shins for letting go of that Marlin .45 Camp Carbine many years back during a HUGE moment of foolishness...something about that penchant for store-bought food....

Also have MKII & Single-Six Ruger handguns to go with my 10/22.

For pokiness, but power:
S&W 686-6 along with a Marlin 1894 Lever action in .357. The Hornady LeverEvolution in these is phenomenal!

For volume of fire:
Glock 19, along with the Kel-Tec Sub-2000 both with 17 round G-17 magazines. For extended periods, there are the 3, 33 round magazines that fit either gun.

For other times:
CZ-75 BD, Hi-Point 995 in 9MM.

.22 LR Semi-auto Rifle,
Browning Buckmark.

I've got 4" and 6" S&W Model 29-2s. I'm thinking of adding a 16" Cimarron Winchester Model 92 clone to go along with them. It'd be a good home defense gun in those rare situations when a long gun would be appropriate for me, plus I go hunting every thirty years or so, so when I'm 80 it could come in handy...

I have two of the Ruger P-series 9mm and a PC-9. Hoping to add Glock 26/Glock 19, along with the Kel-Tec Sub-2000 soon.

taliv....what all can you shoot out of that .480? (other ammo sizes I mean)

dunno. nothing that i know of. however, i believe .480 ruger can be shot in a .475 linebaugh if you happen to have one of those. i'm not positive though.

.22lr
Marlin mod 60
Ruger MK I,II,III
Ruger 77/22 MK II
Savage MK II
H&R 199
Hard to beat a good .22 lr with such diversity in ammo.
