"A Magnum Research BFR revolver in 45/70 on your hip with a Marlin 1895 slung over your shoulder would be a nice combo."

Would have to be on opposite sides other wise you would either fall over from the weight or walk in circles.

Here in Wyoming, it they could both be put on the same side to offset the wind so you could actually stand up striaght.

Not sure I get the point of the same caliber. Handguns and rifles have very different design constraints, because they have different intended uses (in general).

Handguns are designed pretty much for portability, concealability, and the ability to operated with one hand. Long guns don't have those constraints.

Long guns don't need to be (as) portable, (as) concealable, and are designed to be operated with two hands and a shoulder.

When I look at handgun rounds, they tend to be short and relatively wimpy - when viewed from the point of a rifle caliber.

When I look at rifle rounds, they tend to be long and hard to control - when viewed from the point of a rifle caliber.

To each his own, I guess. When I look at handgun rounds in rifles, or rifle rounds in handguns, they look to me like those boat/car/plane combos that were a big deal in the late 50s.

.45 Colt

Handguns:

Three Ruger Stainless Old Model Vaqueros
One Uberti 1873 SAA Clone
Two Uberti/Cimarron 1871 "Navy Colt" Open Top Replicas

Long Guns:

Marlin 1894
Uberti/Cimarron 1866 Winchester Replica
Pedersoli "Colt Lightning" pump action replica

Yeah, I'm one of those Cowboy Action shooters. Although I've carried the one of the Vaqueros and the Marlin on woods loafing expeditions.

Thesr are my combos:

-Marlin 1894C and Ruger GP100 in .357

-Marlin Camp 45 and Auto Ord. 1911 GI in .45 ACP

-Ruger PC4 and Ruger P944 in .40 Auto

-Walther G22 and SigSauer Mosquito in .22 LR

-Auto Ord. M1 Carbine and Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine

-Beretta CX4 Storm and Beretta2FS in 9mm

I like carbines. Most of the shooting I do is 75-150 yards and they are cheaper to feed. The commom ammo and mag concept is just plain neat too.

.357 Magnum... Rossi 92 lever and Ruger Blackhawks (cowboy guns)

.22LR... Henry 001 lever and Ruger MKIII

.40 S&W... SIG 229 and... um, haven't decided yet but probably a CX4.

A .44 magnum Marlin lever gun and a .44 magnum Desert Eagle has the advantage that you can leave the carbine home and take the 14" barrel for the DE with you. ... This works for the .357 magnum version also.

It is a lot less ammo to stock up on if they use the same caliber. Besides the S&W 5906 and the Marlin Camp 9 take the same magazines.

I have that as well, 1894 in .357, and the Python, and a Taurus 88 in .357mag, my fav set in the bush looking for Yotes or feral piggies!

I have been thinking of adding a rifle to my meager arsenal. I was thinking of a general purpose gun, and thought about a Ruger 10/22. Then it occurred to me that I already have a .22lr Ruger semi/auto handgun. I have read in the past of people owning a handgun and longgun in the same caliber; maybe .357 or .44 magnum, etc. But I was thinking most of this was in years gone by-

Other than using the same ammunition, what are the benefits of this setup?

Thanks for your help!

I don't think that most of this 'buying' was only done in years gone by. I did this kind of buying from 1998-2001 the most. I know many people who buy firearms in the same calibers from 22LR to other centerfire calibers to save on ammunition cost, buying factory made ammo in bulk and in reloading @ home.

I think that it is a fabulous idea to add a 22LR to your collection. Stand up and be proud of your collection as the other poster told you. I don't own a Ruger 10/22 but I know many people who do and LOVE them.

Combos are great!

22LR - Combo
357Magnum - You can use 38 specials too. Combo.
9mm - Combo.
45Colt aka long colt (Think handgun and a lever action rifle.) Combo.
44Magnum - Same as above. You can use 44 specials too. Combo.

I would get a sweet lever action rifle (Browning BL22, Win 94-22 if you can still find one or a Marlin 39A.) in 22LR or a Marlin Papoose - break down one with case.

If you do want a centerfire caliber rifle to match the same in a handgun... the sky is your limit in 'pistol calibers'. I am partial to combo set ups - on purpose in 22LR and other calibers!

I only own one NON combo centerfire firearm. A Marlin Model 336SS in 30-30. No handgun for that - that I know of!

I don't have a large firearm collection as some men have including my groom/husband. I am proud of what I own though. I am INTO 22LR and 45Colt the 'most' at this point in my life.

Best wishes!

Catherine
