San Francisco Proposes New Gun Control Measures

(CBS 5) SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom hailed new proposed city gun legislation, and he did it Wednesday from the neighborhood most plagued by gun violence.

“Enough is enough,” said Newsom in the city’s Bayview district. “We need common sense gun control.”

The announcement came nearly one year after a judge struck down a law banning handgun possession in the city.

One part of the measure outlaws the possession or sale of guns on any city-owned property, expanding the current ban from buildings like City Hall and schools to include outdoor locations like city parks.

Mayor Newsom said he also hopes to extend the ban to public housing complexes, but federal laws may make that complicated.

The proposed legislation would also require people who commit crimes with guns to sign up with the police department, then probation officers could keep better tabs on them.

Another aspect would require all gun owners to store their guns disabled with a trigger lock or placed in a locked-box. Authorities said lock boxes would help to keep legal guns from being stolen and then later used illegally.

"It is fair to say that a majority of gun crime is committed with illegal guns," District Attorney Kamala Harris said. “It’s a reality that a lot of weapons and guns that we find in connection with a homicide are stolen."

The idea, she contends, is to remind legal gun owners how to behave.

"Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn't mean that we're not going to walk into that home and check to see if you're being responsible and safe in the way that you conduct your affairs," Harris said.

San Francisco's only gun shop is also a target of the proposed legislation, which would require it and any future gun shops in the city to send police officials a gun sales list every six months.

Even though criminals already don't follow the law, city leaders believe any gun crackdown makes the city safer.

“It’s just time and it’s the right thing to do,” said Harris, citing existing laws in Alameda and Los Angeles counties that are similar to the proposed ones for San Francisco.

Fourth Done Also?

"Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn't mean that we're not going to walk into that home and check to see if you're being responsible and safe in the way that you conduct your affairs," Harris said.

So now they want to abridge the 4th amendment as well as the 2nd? That is good because the ACLU will fight this as well. When they mention that they can't restrict people from having guns in government housing, this is partially because of a fight the ACLU put up in Chicago a while back. So the ACLU is good for something once in a long while.

Was the decision on ownership of firearms in gov't housing, or was it on warrantless searches to determine if residents had firearms?

What a lovely sentiment to hear from a District Attorney.

The article states:

The author is apparently auditioning for a job at The Onion.

So, the police don't keep records on people who commit crimes with
guns, and to correct that deficiency, they will have the criminals
self-report. And the probation office does not know what the criminals
were convicted of, so the criminals must report to the police
department which will inform the probation office. Gee. Most jurisdictions
I have heard of, the courts inform the probation office what crimes
the offender was convicted of.

This is a joke, right?

"Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn't mean that we're not going to walk into that home and check to see if you're being responsible and safe in the way that you conduct your affairs,"

Will the ACLU oppose this?

"Good afternoon, I'm here to sign up for the gun-crime list."
"Alright then, what do you have in mind."
"Well I'm having a bit of a tough choice between robbing convenience stores or just carrying the gun when I break into houses."
"I'd go with the house breaking if I were you."
"Right-o then that'll do, put me down for that one. I suppose I'll be seeing you later then."
"You stay out of trouble now."
"Hahhaa you too mate."

We wrote Frisco politicians off years ago, they don't even belong in CA :cuss:, however, I've heard there's ample property to be had in IRAQ we'd like them to see:rolleyes:, especially Feinstein, Boxer, and Pelosi.

Have a great Kenpo day

There goes the Cow Palace shows. They always had some good Colts there, too.

Calfornia gets more amazing every day

This is SF. They are their own ultra-left enclave. I imagine the citizens in SF support this stuff.. after all voters passed the handgun ban through the proposition process. It passed by a decent margin too.. so it's obvious the SF citizens want more gun control. Sad.

I would beg to differ...:scrutiny:

San Francisco does not own the Cow Palace. The city does own a small part of the parking lot, but that's not enough leverage to ban the shows.

This issue has cropped up before when some S.F. politician vows to "shut down" the gun show, only to find out the Cow Palace is in a different city and county.

Now that IS a classic isn't it !

This has to be in contention for the top ten "creepiest quotes by a petty bureaucrat who aspires to be a tyrant" I have ever seen on this board.

It is astounding that someone can go to law school and have so little regard for Constitutional liberties as this.

I'd be responsible until they came into my home, invaded my privacy, conducted an unconstitutional search underneath an unconstitutional law, and told me how to live my life. Then, I would be showing my HD skills.

Thank God I don't live there. Hard to believe that the people who settled that city in the 1850's came from the Kansas City area... of course, we're fly over country to them.

Smug idiots.

What a keen sense of the obvious Ms. Harris! If a majority of "gun crime" is committed with illegal guns then a majority of "gun crime" is committed by criminals. And they ain't going to obey any law. What an idiot.

This is probably the scariest thing I have ever heard quoted from a government official. I think I need another gun or two so I'm not so far from them when at home!!

Attitudes like this, I.E. complete disregard for the 4th amendment is exactly why the 2nd is so important. I sure as hell don't want the government walking into my home to "check up on me.":fire:
