savage 12 .22-250...stainless or blued?

planning on getting a .22-250 soon for groundhogs, coyotes, beavers, etc.

i've pretty much settled on a savage 12. friend of mine has one and i love the accutrigger. i'm having trouble deciding on which specific model to get, so i'd like your opinions. i can get the FCV, which has the accustock, but is blued, or i can get the fvss, which is stainless, but no accustock. not sure why they don't offer one with both. the rifle will probably spend most of its life in my truck for taking targets of opportunity, so stainless would be nice. any experience with the accustock? would it be worth giving up the SS bbl?

feel free the throw out any other makes/models that will drive tacks like the savage for similar price.

Regardless of which brand that you choose, if a stainless is available, they will give around 20-25% more barrel life than a chrome-moly version. Make sure it's stainless and not a weather shield type of coating over steel.

The TC Venture or Icon models do not have stainless, but are MOA guaranteed with 5R rifling.

I had a Savage 12bvss pre accu-trigger. It was one of the finest most accurate production rifles I have ever fired. I got hosed by a customer for about 5K in materials and labor and needed some cash. Wish I never sold it but I will have another. It will be another Savage in SS .22-250 FV no questions or thoughts about it.

M12

One of my best friends has a M12 BVSS pre-accutrigger. I was so impressed frome just handling it that I had to have one. I am no benchrest shooter and I was able to pay $639 to my door, so I ended up with a brand new M12 VLP. It is a 2009 model without a detachable box magazine. I'm told it was probably a distibutor special. Finally, after 8 months have the accessories I need for some prairie dog poppin'. It was an accidental purchase that I'm extremely pleased I made!

I have the 12fv in .223 blued and it shoots great always functions but it weighs 10lbs empty so I hope you don't plan on longs hikes with it. It would be a great target rifle or riding around gun though.

nope, i'll just be posting up the edge of the fields and popping groundhogs and such

would y'all give up the accustock for the SS bbl? i guess there's always the option of bedding the cheaper stock or getting an aftermarket stock.

Personally I went with the laminated stock I just do not care for the plastic stocks, no doubt the accustock is the better of the two synthetic setups. If you like the synthetics get the stainless and
go with an aftermarket stock you will be more satisfied.

My Model 12 BTVSS in 223 is a tack driver.

Great thing about Savages is you can buy whatever is cheapest, and swap a quality aftermarket stainless barrel (Shilen, McGowen, or upmarket like Douglas, Krieger, etc) and/or stock (HS Precision, McMillian, Bell & Carlson, etc) on yourself in about 15-20 minutes.

sweet. i'll get the FVSS and swap out the stock someday if i'm not satisfied with the factory stock. i know a lot of folks hate them, but i don't have any problem at all with synthetics. i'm a bit of a utilitarian.

You won't be disappointed with the accuracy for sure.

If you want a rifle for hunting and limited shooting at the range, stainless is fine. However, if you want to shoot the rifle a lot, chrome-moly receivers are generally harder and last longer.

My stainless receiver seems to be considerably softer and shows battering where the rotational stop hits the left side of the receiver on opening. Other dimensions seem to be holding their own against about 800 rounds of warm loads. Headspace is normal.
