Will the old Savage 340 action accept new barrels made for the current crop of Savage actions?

Even if it did, the single-lug 340 bolt probably isnt strong enough to handle much more than .30-30 anyway.

As far as concerns for the single bolt head lug (the bolt handle would serve as a safety lug if the head lug failed) Model 340 is fine as a .222 Rem or .30-30 bolt action.

It is probably a good feature that the M340 shank and thread pitch are different. Somebody would want to put a .300 Magnum barrel on a M340 action if it could be done.

My son's friend had a .30-30 M340 and my son and I helped him zero his scope at 100 yards. With Winchester factory 170gr straight from Walmart we had three shot groups averaging out to 1". I don't know if that is typical but I was impressed. I had always dismissed them a cheap deer rifle offered are outlets like Western Auto.
