I have a model 99EG in .300 Savage with the original sights. I want to install a Marbels peep sight on it. Anyone have any hints on how to remove the original buckhorn sight. I put a few drops of Kroil on it and tried to drift it off using a piece of dowel and small hammer, but it doesn't want to budge, and I don't want to do any damage to the rifle. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Drive out left to right. Better to use a piece of brass stock, rather than a piece of dowel. Support the rifle firmly (Well-padded in a vise, if possible), and whack the drift solidly with a hammer of some weight. Should do the trick...

As noted, gotta make sure you drive it the correct direction. Also, put multiple layers of masking tape on the barrel so you won't mark it. If you're having that much trouble, you're probably going the wrong way.

I took the rear dovetail out of mine, made in 1916. Added a custom scope mount that keeps the rifle original without drilling. Even tho the rifle is about 100 years old, it came right out.

Well nuts. Thanks for the replies. I tried it going left to right with a brass rod and larger hammer, but still no luck. I am a bit hesitant to beat on it any more. I figured it would slide out without much effort, but I was wrong. Maybe it is time to visit a gunsmith as much as I hate to.
