Savage MK II BTVS scope info (and more) needed!

I think CZ probably has the edge on quality control as I have shot a number of different CZ's (452, 455's) and they are all consistently "good". Not great mind you, but very good.

No doubt CZ has the best QC but they aren't always the most accurate. A couple of years ago I saw a lot more comments about the Savages. Most people seemed to do very well with them but it was hit or miss whether they were better than the CZ's. Most of the time it would be that CZ's were better but there was a fair percentage of MkII's that shot better than CZ's.

I should point out that I had to tweak the heck out of mine to get it to shoot as well as it does. It would always shoot an occasional good group but there were a lot of times when it wasn't shooting that well. I knew the accuracy was there. I just needed to fix what ailed it. Turned out it was action screws backing off like I described before. Now all I have to do is check the torque settings on those screws and they will stay put for a long time. And I will have an accurate rifle. And FWIW before I made the modification to the thumb hole stock I switched from the synthetic stock. It had more problems than just the action screws. A slight breeze would bend that stock so that it put pressure on the barrel at some point. They are NOT very good stocks.

Well that HURT...

Couldn't decide between the 22LR and 17 HMR, so (wait for it)...

Yup - ordered both of them - got the 22LR on the way from a local store with the standard medium wood finish. Found pix of a 17 HMR model with a blonde finish stock which I understand is no longer made. I kinda like the stock in the lighter shade, so what the heck!? Online dealer says he pulled the gun and verified that the color is the lighter shade as shown in the pix on their website.

I called Boyds Stocks and they say both what I ordered and what they now show on their website are the same stocks, but the lighter color I like is probably just a special run or what they used on a particular run of the line. Their current stocks are much darker - more like a dark walnut?

Anywho...guess this means I have a little more time to scope shop!

The top pix is the 17 HMR in the "blonde" finish - the second pix is the current color offered by Boyds (much darker) - the bottom is the current 22LR stock offering as OEM from Boyds. I should have the top and bottom models on the way!?

Now...gotta decide on which scopes, and different powers / styles for the different calibers - maybe a 9 to 10x max for the 22, a 14x for the 17 HMR?

Actually there has always been some variation in the color of their stocks. I actually got mine as a second because the color was darker than they accepted to be sold. I prefer the darker color so it worked out great for me. I got a perfectly good stock for half what it would have cost and it was stained the way I would have stained it if I was doing it.

Today I ordered the Nikon PROSTAFF 5 2.5-10X40 Silver BDC to go on the BTVS (22LR) - I'm still holding off on ordering anything for the 17 HMR until I can eyeball it and make sure of the stock color, but as of now, it will probably get the Nikon PROSTAFF 5 3.5-14X40 Silver BDC.

Still looking for rings - I looked at the Warne rings in an earlier post - they're on my short list, but I think I prefer mounts with the rings split at the 3 & 9 o'clock position instead of 12 & 6 like the Warne.

I did stumble across some pretty nice looking / highly rated Burris Signature Zee Rings, but they finish is nickel (may be a little too polished to match the scope?), and for whatever reason, they mount with a flathead screw (have Torx heads on the rings).

I may just end up taking the scope with me and seeing what kind of rings my out of town Gander Mountain has hanging on the rack.
