Just came across a Model 16 .308 win. Savage with a 24" fluted barrel. It has a synthetic stock. Non Accustock.

I've seen plenty Savage 16/116 rifles but never one with a fluted barrel that wasn't a lightweight model. This thing has almost a medium-heavy contour fluted barrel. Something like a model 12 would have. Maybe it was a limited run?

Brand new in box for $550 otd. That sound good? Anyone see one of these things? I'm sure it shoots just as good as any Savage, just that barrel is throwing me off.

Also any recommendations for a good satin silver scope under around $400? 3-9x40mm would be plenty. It's not that big of a deal but I thought it'd be cool to match the scope color with barrel color if I pick this thing up. Thanks!

Is it an old flatback? I know the early 116s that had the on/off brakes came with fluted barrel....116fsak or something if I'm remembering correctly....dunno if they carried that onto the new round backs tho.

Scope wise i can't suggest anything off hand, and will have to look around. Untill fairly recently you could still get silver scopes from most manufacturers.

Bought the rifle. I gave up on the silver scope. Seems like they only make black matte these days for the most part. Oh well.

I'll post some pics and hopefully some groups this week.

Silver scopes are few and far between, so are gloss black and blued. Everything now is tacti-cool and looks like crap on a nice blued steel rifle. Swift used to have some silver scopes, so did Nikon. I actually spoke to Burris and asked them if they could consider making something other than tactical black and it was like, uh, well, what you want? Uh, like silver! Why silver? Um, because my rifle is like silver maybe? Silence, crickets chirping, but at least they took my call.

You will love it and the price is good (unless you compare with Cabela Savage 12 special, I got mine at $179 after rebate). I had a Savage 16 in stainless 308 fluted heavy barrel, pre-accute trigger but in laminated stock, I sold it because it was heavy and I don't do long range shooting, but I missed it so much and built a Mauser 308 in heavy barrel, then bought my $179 Cabela Savage 12, but in 223.

I can understand not doing gloss black, that has to be polished (and done really well) before anodizing, and you CAN duplicate bluing with ano, but that's also a highpolish, and some blending of the dyes, which means even more labor and cost .....

Silver tho? Is just media blasted, ano'd and not dyed. Cheaper and easier.

While leupolds custom shops down, I wonder if they would sell raw bodies that you could get ano'd and sent back for assembly......it would have to be in spec.....but I wonder.....

When I said blued I meant as in blued steel as per an old El Paso Weaver, not faux blueing on an aluminum tube!
I have seen a few of the steel Weaver's that were done a few years ago still for sale NIB....those are getting rare tho.

The era of the steel scopes long past unfortunately, I rather liked the way they looked. Out here you never see any in decent condition, it's just too tough a climate for them, which is why I haven't bought any for the vintage guns I've messed with.

Heh, truth to tell with good application you can duplicate bluing well enough with Durablue....at least to deceive a casually observer, but I just can't really....get into it.

No, newer Accu trigger model. I guess it does have an Accu stock too.

I found out it actually is a limited run ordered specifically for Cabelas. Seriously doubt this model could be had for that low though so it is definitely a different model.

Ordered one of the newer Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40mm scopes with the Tri-MOA reticle. Can't wait to try it out.

Like, get to the range, already!
I'm dying for a range report!
(.308 is one of my favorite calibers and my old Savage M12 BVSS in .243 was the most accurate rifle I have ever owned).

Ha! I pick it up tomorrow, the scope, base and rings come Friday. I'll likely do a range report this weekend.

(.308 win is also one of my favorites, if not thee favorite) :D

Picked it up today. 20200810_161424.jpg 20200810_161411.jpg 20200810_161033.jpg Sure enough 24" heavy fluted. And... 20200810_161300.jpg Now I get a free back massage everytime I go in.

But that does explain why I've never seen a 16/116 or any Savage xx/xxx in a 24" fluted barrel. Usually its 20" or 26" that gets the flutes from what I've seen.

It's nothing special but it was pleasing to the eye. I hate pencil barrels and I hate stubby bull barrells-mainly aesthetically speaking as I'm a tree stand bean field hunter and could probably lug a 30" bull barrel up there if I wanted.

This just seemed like a cool medium for me. Plus it's my very first stainless steel rifle. I dogged on them for years, preferring blued and walnut. I don't know. I seen this one. I dig it.

Range report this weekend when the Luepold comes in. I got some 168gr SMK and IMR 4064 laying around. We'll see.

I'd put a silver Burris Fullfield II on that scope if it were me. You can still find them in silver, and they are fantastic scopes for the money.

I would say it was special run just for Cabela's. Cabela's and Walmart will get brand new Savage rifles without the Accu-trigger as store exclusives. I'm sure that you will be pleased with how it shoots. I have a Model 12 FVL in 308 (varmint barrel) that shoots great with Norma 150Gr FMJ and Hornady 168Gr ammo.

Has Accu trigger and stock. So doesn't make much sense that Cabelas ordered this specific product. I was thinking with the 1 in 10 twist I'd try 168's and 175's first. I will definitely try 150's though.

Well I bought Burris rings, Burris bases, coulda went with the Fullfield 2. Made like a matching trio. I didn't see the Fullfield in silver... oh well. I'll be happy.

Very nice!

I was never a fan of stainless. Then one year, I came across a 116 Weather Warrior. SS Action & barrel, in a grey laminate stock. This was many years...it was a non Accutrigger. And it was absolutely beautiful! I wasn’t one for silver scope, rings or mount though. No sir.

This sounds like a sea shanty. Re-read it and try not to sing it in your head.

Thanks for your input, am glad I went for the matte black after all.

I still do wish scopes were offered in blued to match our old pre matte rifles. Silver to match our stainless.

I have a similar looking rifle (Winchester EW in .308) - I thought that I wanted a matching scope color however, none to be had. I went with a Leupold VX 3i 3.5-10x40 and their rings/ base in matte blue - I have grown to like the contrast.
