Anyone know anything about the package savage offers? Is it one of their standard guns, just equipped with a scope?

What brand of scope are they mounting on them?

I think it's a Simmons IIRC.

The Savage sure beats the heck out of the Rem 710 combination. Do NOT go down the 710 road.

I bought a combo package '93, cheap, plastic stock, Simmons 3-9x40. It was my first .17hmr rifle, just wanted to try the caliber and see if I liked it. Traded the Simmons for a Leopold shortly after, and then swapped the plastic for a thumbhole laminate... Ended up costing me more than it would have if I had bought what I really wanted up front.

Still, I ended up with a wonderful little shooter!

Bought one of the package guns a couple years ago. Needed a 30-06. Planned on switching out the scope but this one has worked fine so far and it keeps getting pushed to the rear of gun/gun accessories I want.
Only pic I have of this rifle

Everybody says those are Simmons scopes on the Savage package rifles and most say they're trash. I've had good results with Simmons 3-9x32 and 3-9x40. I don't know what everybody's problem is unless they just like to gripe.

I think Savage could do better than to sell their rifles with those cheap plastic stocks. My Model 11GL has the wood stock... it's already pillar bedded and the barrel's free-floated. It shoots quite well. I went ahead and got the one with sights on the barrel because I don't get along with scopes, but the rear sight is Williams's cheap-o and it leaves a lot to be desired. I had thought of upgrading to a Foolproof with target knobs, but the more I've been thinking about it, the more I'm leaning towards XS Sights' ghost ring set. That way, I can just set it dead on for 300yds and it'll be minute of deer's kill zone that far out.

My Savage package rifle came equipped with a Simmons "8-Point" 3-9x40 scope. Not the best, to be sure, but it seemed okay. Then I got a screaming deal on a used Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40, and I put that on the Savage, and that was that.

I'm very pleased with the Bushnell, but would I have missed any of the shots I took had I left the Simmons on? We'll never know, but frankly, I doubt it.

I bought one in 7mm Rem. Mag., and it shot well with the original scope, but it wouldn't stay tight on the bases. I recently swapped it for a 3X9 Leupold VX-II, and I'm still sighting it in with that scope. I personally feel it was a good value.
