Which one would be better for a bench gun/ plinker type at the range

A savage or a mossberg atr 100? im still not sure on caliber or anything like that yet either

Savage is doing everything right these days, I'd go with them. Only think I don't like about Savage is they aren't chambering for .260 Rem.

I had a mossberg plinkster, broke in 300 rounds, unfixable cost wise at this point.

I should have gone with the savage.

Mossberg makes great shotguns, and should stick with them.

Savage. And you can re-barrel with a Shilen Supermatch in 260. Takes 30 minutes. Did mine in 6.6x55 and 6.5x47 Lapua though.

I have to say, I like them both, a lot, but if we were going to do a blind taste test, and pull 10 rifles of each, out of 10 diff boxes, chances are, your savage is going to be more accurate.

savage/stevens200 on accuracy, price, features and most of all aftermarket support. Their literally the 1911, AR15 or small block chevy of bolt action rifles.

Mossberg 100 ATR, super for the price, and can be upgraded as they are a clone of the Howa 1500. A Great hunting rifle or plinker.

Savage, umm, they rock, easy to upgrade, come with a super trigger, are built to be basic hunting rifles all the way up to serious tactical rifles.

"...broke in 300 rounds..." What broke? A new Mossberg rifle? You get a one year limited warrantee. Call 'em. Telephone: (203) 230-5300 (8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. E.S.T.) Fax: (203) 230-5420 For Service Inquiries: 800-363-3555
txdude321, you need to decide what you want to do with any centrefire rifle. For shooting just because it's fun, go with a .223. The ammo is relatively inexpensive and easy to get. The Mossberg ATR doesn't come in .223.
A Savage Model 12 series(and several other models) does. Savage rifles have always been known for having the best out-of-the-box accuracy for the money. They're very hard to beat. If you opt for one of their 'packages', the scopes are low end, but serviceable until you get around to upgrading it. Same rifle otherwise.
"...And you can re-barrel with a Shilen Supermatch in 260..." You can put a Shilen barrel on any rifle.

You can put a Shilen barrel on any rifle.

True, but the Savage has a barrel nut that allows easier barrel swaps by the owner. If you understand how to properly seat the barrel, you can do the entire job yourself without a gunsmith.
