Saw my first Henry Long Ranger

Thank you for your impressions of the Henry. The one I pictured above is $1000. I saw one today at a gun show it was priced at nearly $1300.
I prefer lever guns and have debated on buying one for a while…if I ever actually encountered one. Now I find 2 in 1 week.
I am going to do some local club precision matches with mine this summer. If I just make the top half I'll be more than tickled as I know I'm at a disadvantage. I will try and document the experience and write a report. I didn't realize these guns had the interest. For what it is worth, when I bought mine it was for $1k and the sent me with a Sig 3-9 scope to mount on it. If they are still being had for the grand range given the recent impacts in the gun market I'd consider that pretty impressive. If you have any more specific questions about mine to help with the buying process let me know.

Thank you very much @somethingbenign
I appreciate the kind offer.

My interest at this time is tempered by a lack of funds, I’m afraid. Being retired is wonderful , but I no longer have the expendable income I once had. ;)
I was actually going through my gun safe yesterday debating on what guns I could or would sell to fund the purchase of this gun. After seeing the second one at the gun show yesterday I decided I like the looks and weight of the gun. I just haven’t shouldered one yet. Yesterday’s gun was attached to the other guns on the table with a security cable so I couldn’t shoulder it. Maybe I will go to my LGS tomorrow and handle the one they have.

I have wanted a rifle in .308 for a while now. As hard as I have tried to like them, I just don’t care for the operation of a bolt gun. Also, I don’t fancy myself an “Operator” or a “Sniper” and I sure as heck ain’t no John Wick.
I like and am most comfortable with a lever gun. I considered a semiauto and a single shot and those still may be possibilities. Or I could just stick with my trusty Marlin 336 or my Winchester 94 and continue with purchasing handguns and fishing gear on occasion…
We’ll see. I think I will handle the gun and talk to the guys at my LGS about it and go from there.

I really would love to hear how you do at your precision matches.

I had a really nice Savage 99 in .300 Savage (neatly identical to a .308) that I sold years ago for $425. Dunno what they’re going for now, but that might be an option. They were also made in .308

They are not cheap. There was a time I wanted one, but no more. Try searching for parts for them now.

I’ve been trying to come up with the perfect long range, mountain, saddle rifle for years. I’ve yet to find the perfect combination of slimness, weight and accuracy that fits comfortably under the leg while on a horse. The BLR comes close except for it reputation for janky accuracy and that god awful trigger. The Long Ranger is also a contender but I just can’t warm up to them. They’re a bit chunky for what they are.

I’ve gone through a couple of Number 1’s, none have met my accuracy standards. I’ve shot some that do but none that I’ve owned cut the mustard. I think the single shot Blaser might fit the bill but they cost to much to be thrown on a horse IMO. I’ve had horses do some rude things to rifles.

I’ve settled on a bolt gun and put up with the size and issues that come with saddling one.

A Savage 99 in .284 win. , but that's an expensive answer .

I have two Henry’s, a Long Ranger in 308 and a Long Ranger Express in 223/5.56.

They are both accurate, fast handling rifles that carry well in the field but of the two, the 5.56 is my favorite.

With a suppressor attached it’s a great deal of fun and is very accurate.

I’ve got a BLR ‘81 in .358win.
After seasoning the barrel, it’s quite accurate! It needs special treatment of the ammo.
The trigger is BAADD!
You can hang it by the trigger on a nail, and an earthquake won’t fire it!

It’s light enough after removing the horrible block of solid rubber (1-1/4” thick!) original butt pad. I used a 1/2” Boyd’s solid pad...

But, it’s so doggone pretty and flashey! Too pretty to take hunting!
I’ve also got 4-magazines! They’re about $125.00 apiece!!!

So, the Rangers aren’t quite so bad. But I’m not paying that much for a “henry”...

Have a .308. After three years the three inch groups and stiff trigger and heavy awkward bolt causes it to just sit out hunting season but heck it looks good.

Thanks for your perspective. I have read lots of internet articles about how great the Long Rangers are in regards to accuracy. I have found comments on forums that do not paint as rosy a picture. I have decided that I am cooling my jets on the Long Ranger and will take up the hunt for a decent .308 later this summer.

First they look and carry good. Slimmer scopes look way better. My best results come from shoot twice, go do yard work, come back later and shoot two more repeat for a 6 shot group. Then use the gun for a glorified 30-30 in the woods.Forget the word Long. Bought Axis 308s for the granddaughters and they both out shoot it for 1/3 the price including rebate. Video on line a fella was so happy he couldnt wait to " take it to 1000 yds" so that must be the truth

Saw that video. 1000 yards… watched a minute or two. Enough.
Yeah, I already have two 30-30s that shoot great. I don’t need a 3rd. Thanks for posting.
