I went into a LGS and saw the first 2 .22 pump actions I have seen in a long time.

The Taurus was used in MINT condition and was only 249.00

The Henry was not as cute as the takedown 'T' so as it was well over 450.00 I went with the 'T'.

I did not actually LOOK at the caliber and when I went directly to the range I was disappointed to note that the 'T' only shot .22LR and not .22L or S.

Its a beauty and I am thrilled with it,BUT would be so much happier if it would accept all the rimfires.

Still shoots better than I ever will, was nailing 2" bits of claybird at 120 yards.

I bought the last pump 22 magnum Taurus that Academy had on the shelf about five years back and my then 9 year old daughter immediately appropriated it as hers.

Very fun rifle and runs great with CCI. Dynapoints practically drip out the end of the barrel and have horrible accuracy.

Perfect = except for

I have to say I have not shot a pump .22 since I owned a few Winchesters back a 'few' decades ago,and they were a BIT old then.

Now I see this as a perfect car/truck/pack takedown.

The only thing that I would change is to allow it to feed & shoot shorts & longs :cuss:.

BUT considering how well its shoots even the cheap stuff ----- guess she is a keeper :).

Question: Did you actually try to get it to feed shorts or longs?

Not that they are any cheaper than LR (usually they cost more). Just curious.

I have a Ruger SP-101 that specifies Long Rifles only since shorts will tend to make the rest of the LR chamber dirty and make it hard to feed and eject LR. It could be that the extractor on the Tarus is not very strong, and the issue may not be feeding, but extraction. I know that my Marlin 39 TDS is sensitive on this point.

The Taurus is the same as the Rossi (they bought 'em) which is the same as the old Winchester. I think the .22 WILL fire the Long and Short. I'm sure in fact.

A .22 Mag carbine pump is my truck gun.

Your facts are wrong.

All of the Rossi's that I've seen had the same lifter as the Winchester with a pivoting cartridge stop that would cycle any length 22.

Some of the earlier Tauruses (right after they bought Rossi) might have the old style lifter.

The later Tauruses have a solid one-piece lifter with the cartridge stop integrally machined at the correct location for 22 long rifle cartridges. Using a shorter cartridge will allow two cartridges onto the lifter and the second cartridge will not clear the magazine, jamming the gun.

You can convert the later fixed stop to the earlier pivoting stop which works with 22 Shorts by machining a slot and pivot pin hole into the lifter and using the Winchester 62 cartridge stop and pivot pin.

The length and angle of the pivoting stop is very critical and MUST be custom fit to each gun, probably why Taurus dropped it.

Newer one-piece lifter/cartridge stop. You can see how the stop is machined as part of the lifter. The hole doesn't do anything, it's just a through hole. There's nothing to stop more than one 22 short from entering the lifter. The length of the lifter is sized for one 22 long rifle cartridge:

Modified lifter, same as a Winchester 62. A complete Winchester 62 lifter would probably fit if you could find one. The fixed stop was machined down and a slot for the pivoting stop was machined into the lifter. The pivot pin hole was TIG welded up and re-drilled (Taurus hole was too big and too close to the edge of the pivoting piece), and a Winchester 62 pivoting stop and pivot pin was installed. When a 22 Short (or any length 22 cartridge) enters the lifter, the stop pivots up to keep the next cartridge from getting stuck halfway onto the lifter and halfway into the magazine:

Ah, I did not know Taurus modidfed the Winchester and Rossi production at some point. They stopped making them 'cause nobody bought 'em, Taurus didn't make many, and they wanted to focus on Semi-Auto pistol production.

Thanks.

So, ALMOST all the Taurus' will fire Short and Long as will their Rossi parents and their Winchester Grandfather...

t's pretty easy to tell from the outside.

If it's got the original Winchester type lifter than it'll be stamped "22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle" on the barrel.

If it has the one piece lifter it'll be stamped "22LR" on the barrel.

Yes I did try

The first round I tried [ before actually reading the barrel :banghead: ] ,was the .22 long NOT long rifle.

I see that the feed is set up for the LR and I can live with that and have a brick of CCI .22 Quiets that will do what I want for eradication of pests.

And since this cute little rifle shoots SO well,I will not toy with the feed.

rossi 62

I can temporarily modify my 22lr to fire 22 long (cb) or even 22 short. I measured the difference in length of the long and lr. Using an eraser from a pencil cut to the difference in length. insert the eraser to the bottom of the lifter. I used rubber cement to hold the eraser to lifter. Works great, and is not permanent! the long cycles really well in the repeating mechanism of the Rossi 62.
