Mods. feel free to move if this is not the right place.

Well I was out running some errands today and came across the first No Guns sign since getting my CPL in Nov. Normally I would have gone to another place but I needed stamps and didn't feel like traveling to the other end of town.

Glad I remembered to take it out of my pocket before going into the Post Office.

Other side of town would not have helped you... all Post Offices have this sign. You can often buy stamps at the grocery store (which may or may not be posted).

...grocery stores, office depot (office max and staples probably but there's not one near my house) and I know all the wells fargo atm's i visit sell stamps...:)

Post Office

Considered a government building.
Here in Tennessee they are all off limits.
The p.o. box area is seperate and o.k. to carry. The business desk area is off limits and has walk through metal detecters.
We currently have a new law, that made it through the senate and is sitting in the govenors office for a signature that will lift bans on state parks and many other areas, making carry less technical.
Tennessee has taken the stance of "We can regulate firearms at the state level, to include assault class weapons, if they are made here they can be legal here.
I find this as a good stance.

First time you've seen one since November? I'm so jealous. They're everywhere here in central Ohio.

Deltagunner,

GEt me that in writing. My PO says the whole building is "fed" property.

The sad part is I carried mine into my post office for 4 years before finding out this information. :what:

If they are anything like the ones down here, they aren't metal detectors. The post office here has a security system to keep you from stealing things like the pretty butterfly and star wars commemorative stamps they have hanging on the wall (when you purchase the item they deactivate the little thing that sets off the alarm.)

Metal detectors would be pretty hard to regulate at the post office. People carry car keys and ship metal items. I ship several guns a week through the post office. Granted, the guns are boxed up, but if there were metal detectors, they would be going off.

Are they really metal detectors or are they RFID anti-theft devices? Do your car keys set them off or that coffee pot you're sending to Aunt Matilda? If not, they aren't metal detectors.

When I was in Ohio a month ago I stopped at a rest area on RT 80. I recalled a gun busters sign on the door, but I thought is said something like the unlawful possession of a firearm was prohibited. Did this sign apply to me with a carry permit?

If on private property whenever you see the no gun sign you are prohibited by law from carrying there CCW permit or not. If discoverd you are carrying they can ask you to leave, and if you refuse they can call the police and have you arrested. If it's ANY Government owned property (like Post Offfice) Court, Police Station, School etc.. it's very illegal to carry there, as well as bars or restaurants that serve alcohol. I believe the Rest Areas are State owned property and once again illegal to carry there. .... that's how it is in Ohio anyway. I live in Central Ohio too and there are literally TONS of places that post the no carry signs around here. It really sucks too!

I was in a federal building about 2 years ago, and I couldn't even bring my pocket knife (small 2" BUCK) upstairs. those guys had no sense of humour what so ever.

No guns in post offices....wonder why? Haven't you heard that people go postal when they carry in a post office!:D

Seriously though,
If its a government building you can just assume that there is a policy against being armed. I always have to remember to disarm whenever I go to the post office, so far I've always managed to remember to do so.

I actually saw my first "no guns" sign on the front entrance of a store a couple weeks ago in Phoenix. The place is an enormous electronics superstore (not a chain) with multiple sliding doors leading into the place and on all the sliding doors were posted large signs saying something to the effect "no guns on the premises: violators will be prosecuted". It wasn't the fact that they had a "no gun" sign that caught my attention, it was that there were at least three or four of these signs posted no more than a a couple feet apart.:scrutiny: So I had to walk all the way back across the huge parking lot (I don't think I could have been further away) disarm and walk all the way back in 100+ degree heat, I wasn't happy about that.

Wanted to take a rifle overseas on a trip a few years ago. In order to avoid re-importation fees I had to get a form from customs. I take the rifle down to the federal offices and, of course, there is security. I produce the rifle - security panics - "You can't take that inside". I explain that I have to take it inside to get it examined by customs.

You would think they may have seen this situation before but apparently not. After a great discussion and much going to-and-fro I was escorted to the office by a customs agent. When I got to the office they were great. Several really keen shooters and no problems whatsoever.
