Scary Incident This Morning. Really got me thinking!

A friend of mine is house sitting for some folks and she asked if i would come stay with her because she was afraid to stay alone :rolleyes:
Apparently there have been some robberies in the area. But any way this house is absolutly huge. 10 bed rooms and all sorts of other jazz. Beautiful home but these folks do not have an alarm system and they keep their dogs in crates back in a back room at night. No entry ways are visible to the dogs so they are of no deterance to someone wanting to come in. The master bedroom is tucked way in the corner on the second floor. I took a shower around 2:30am as i am watching the second run of Leno (yes they have a flat screen TV in the shower and 3 shower heads)As i was in there i got to thinking how i was compeltly vulnerable i would have no way of knowing if someone were in the house and the way the shower is positioned i would have no idea they were in there until it was too late. But i just put it off as being a little tripped out about being in a house i have never been in before. So i go to bed and awake around 7:30a to the warm sun shining on me now i never ever get up this early. So didn't feel like getting out of bed so i lay there for a few minutes when all the sudden the door to the bedroom flies open. my friend is still in bed and i know that no one is supposed to be in the house so i guess intinctivly to keep her safe i roll off the bed covering her with the blankets so the person thinks i am the only one there. And i just stand there next to the bed. Scared the ???? out of this guy. I didn't have my Sig but normally it would have been on the nightstand out and aimed on this guys chest and he may have had a heart attack.
It was the roofer and he says ohh sorry i was looking for water damage. ever heard of knocking?

Just really made me think about how important my dog, alarm system and Sig are. I mean this guy probably went through every room in the house looking for water damage and i did not hear a thing until he was right in the room.
 
Ok, I'll be first to bite.

Who gives a 'roofer' a key to their house and permission to come in and look around? Something fishy here.

I've known roofers for years, and when I show some of them this they are going to ROTFL fer sure!!!! Sounds like one of their Tequila dreams.. :evil:

So how did you confirm that said intruder was a roofer, and what happened with the GF? Did she sleep through all this?

TV in the shower is not as attractive as the 3 shower heads IMO.... :cool:
 
Uumm, could have been a bad situation in several ways. First, who really
knows who this guy was and or is? Was he checked out? And by whom,
you? the PD, or who? Hells bells, he could have been an excaped con,
a sex pervert, a mentally deranged killer, etc. Second, it could as well
been an embrassing situation for you my friend, as you were loaded up
in bed (in someone elses house), with their housekeeper? Now, what
would friends and family think of you; especially if you had to make
a defenseive stand with a firearm; and the story got leaked to the
media? :eek: :uhoh:

Rule of thumb, NEVER-EVER go anywhere that is legal, lawful, ethical,
etc. without a firearm. :) :D
 
yeah, we need pics to verify the story.

oh and also, we're deducting 10 ninja points for your security faux pas, or however that phrase is spelt.

that roofer woulda had to clean his shorts if he'd busted in my master bedroom at 730am, as he would most likely quickly be staring down the barrel of two handguns, mine and the wifeys.


beside the fact that he never would have made it that far into my house without me being alerted. I have a very good alarm system, with TWO very loud sirens. that and my two vicious (yeah right) leg humpers.

rich people are stupid sometimes. for what they paid for that flatscreen in the bathroom they could have installed a nice alarm system, and probably had enough left over for a couple of cameras.

Sounds like half the roofers around here. A lot of the ex-City Council members, too. :)

I agree I informed her to double check with the family about that. We knew they were getting roofing done while they were gone. but nothing was said about them needing to come inside.

Why not bring the Sig with you?

I normally live in on campus housing. which means no guns. i leave it at a buddiess house. and unfortunatly him and his roomate missed their flight and were still in LA and i couldn't get in his house. The Sig will be with us for the rest of the time.

We knew that roofing was going to be done then I went out to double check things.

well i won't post pictures of the house considering i stated they have no alarm system. and it would be easy to find out where i am from. but this particular young lady went to NY with me last week and i am going to be posting pictures of my trip over on the armed polite society.

This is quite amusing because I had a similar situation a few years back ... ok, here's my psuedo-ninja flashback ... my wife and I were asked to house-sit for friends of her family. We were city-dwellers and the house was relatively big and in a relatively woody location so we felt vulnerable. Not being a gun-owner at that time, I figured the best way to protect ourselves would be to know ahead of time that someone was in the house to allow an escape so we placed objects that would make noise if someone passed through entry points (very Home Alone'ish stuff). Nothing happened but we did not sleep very well that weekend! :cuss:

Yes, if they're in the middle of a project and there's a bad rainstorm, they WILL need to come inside to check for any leaks, coming from either the finished portion of the new roof, or the seam where new meets old.

Well-to-do folks don't always think the way less well-off folks do. Quite often, they'll leave keys with a construction foreman, with permission to come in to do whatever inspections are necessary. Especially if they have someone there to watch over their stuff. I guess they figure that if they have all the important stuff either locked up in a bank, or in a safe, anything else is easily replaceable.

They hadn't strated working yet. but still you knock when entering closed doors at 7:30ish in the morning.
 
Alright that does it. I woke up this morning 7:30am to go down and get some water everything was in order. Head back up to bed. Come down around 9:30am to head out and get the dogs some food. All the cupboards had been rummaged through the doors left hanging wide open and food had clearly been taken. i explore the house a little more to find rugs moved and the trupet just laying in the middle of the recitle room.
Sorry but this is unacceptable. Looking for water damage is one thing but in my own personal opnion these people no longer have business inside the house. My lady friend is calling the owners today to inform them of this.
 
I am not seeing a lot of gun related content in this thread, and have several other doubts as to its appropriateness on THR.
