A member of the church I go to had a scary experience on friday. Some people followed her in their car for about 20 miles. Once she realized she was being followed she called here dad and he called the cops and waited in his truck. She drove by her house and once she and her followers went by her dad started following in his truck. All of a sudden the people in the car stoped, got out, and started smashing up her dads truck with a baseball bat. The cops got there before it got any worse. Once they arrested them, the searched their car. THey had several metal pipes, knives, and baseball bats. Obviously not a good experience but something good did come of it. My mom (who used to think that CCW's were kind of silly and pointless) has decided to get a CWP and carry a gun in here car. Mabey now I can finally get her to go to the range with me and learn how to shoot. I was wondering if anyone here could give any advice on the type of gun and type of carry she should use? She is usually dressed up so it might be hard to carry in a way that doesn't print. Any advice?

the 1 that feels best in her hand and hits the target where she aims in the most powerfull caliber she can control.

build the carry system around it women have several advantages over guys.
a big one is the ability to carry large purses virtually anywhere,,,,,

dont get her a cute lil womans gun that cant stop a irritated chihuahua.

Let her make the decision.
Take her to a shop with a range that rents guns and let her see what suits her best.
Heve her check out http://www.corneredcat.com/ It's a great site that's mainly oriented towards women and guns, but I've gotten a lot of useful information on it too.
Good luck.

A nine-shot Taurus .22 revolver in the hands of a scared/pissed off woman is one helluva deterrent. Inexpensive, light and portable... and the practice ammo is a few pennies a round...for now, anyway. For defense, load it with solid-point Stingers or the equivalent.

Sounds like the young lady has an ex-boyfriend problem. Hope it's over.

Age? Any significant physical limitations?

Budget?

And she should get formal training from somewhere. You can't just let a noob go blasting.

Wyoming? Count yourself fortunate you're not in a restrictive state, like <ahem> mine. Y-all got open carry there? That might be the best option.

That aint going to happen.

No physical limitations. The only problem would be that she is always dressed up since she has to for work so I am not sure how well she could conceal a gun.

glad everyone was ok. i second the previous post of let her try several guns out and pick one that fits her hand.

Just an observation, you always typo "her" with "here".

Anyway, I'm glad everyone was ok. Sometimes it takes something like that for people to realize their safety is in their own hands. The police can only show up to make a report. If you want to survive, you need to arm yourself.

Ergonomics, whatever points nicely and naturally, and is SMALL ENOUGH that it won't get left at home...

Definitely try out the little Kel-Tecs... Yeah, a .380 ain't a Dirty Harry Tacticool Boomer, but they make one heckuva fashion accessory.

:barf: :barf::barf: Yeesh... I really wish people would STOP recommending .22s for self-Defense, ESPECIALLY in a Taurus. I have that particular revolver, otherwise I would have stopped at the .22 comment. If you want to use something that unreliable with an unreliable underpowered ammuntion type, go ahead, but PLEASE don't recommend this combination to anyone else.

Thanks!

Why bash the .22?

I mean, forgive me if I'm wrong, but do you really feel it's that unreliable and underpowered?

I always felt it gave a pretty reasonable punch while significantly reducing the threat of having a bullet go through someone and hit something (or someone) else. My father has been carrying one for quite some time and has never really had a problem with it.

whatever she feels most comfortable shooting. if she loves the feel of a .45, get a .45, if she likes the little .22, get the .22. its about shot placement. don't bash a .22 just cause you would carry something bigger.

A .22 for self defense? I've had too many boxes with way too many duds for my comfort level. I'll only vote for center fire...9mm is small enough.

Mark.

True - I'll take an lower-power .25 over a .22 rimfire, but without going a lot larger in the package, you can get up to .32 or .380...

Reliability and ergonomics in a small package. Check any pre-conceived notions at the door.

The Bersa .380's seem to be well liked and have a good reputation for reliability. You also could not go wrong having her check out a S&W 642 w/laser grips.

YES.

Let her shoot a couple of different guns revolvers & Pistols. Let her decide what she feels most cumfortable with. Off hand I would think a .38 or 9mm would be good. Something she could carry in her purse or pocket. I somehow always come back to a S&W j Frame either a 442 or 642. It's small enough to be concealed easily, has enough power to put down a threat, and is managable in the recoil department

Don't get hung up on any particular make... Get what fits.

With a 1911A1 with a curved backstrap, I just sort of naturally shoot where I'm thinking. If I try that with a J-frame Smith, I neuter the target. When trying to "think" upper chest. The little Kel-Tec is almost as nice for me as the 1911... But she may be more comfy with something else entirely.

My mother carried a featherweight .22 revolver until a few months ago. I finally urged her enough to pick up a pf-9 (9mm). TBH though, .22 is waaayyyyy better than nothing. And in a revolver you can just pull the trigger again in case of a dud...

I've never had CCI stingers fail to fire for me. Although I just started using them at the range and only have gone through about 300 or so.

One to look at that frequently overlooked these days is the Beretta model 86.

Bear in mind that while bullets of heavier weight and diameter are often preferable to those of lower numbers, the general handling qualities, point and balance of a handgun dictates the ease with which they can be effectively used. The 86 scores high on all counts.

Every time someone asks this question they open up a can of worms. I personally think it is slightly sexist to assume that because she is a woman she would only like a .22. Take her to a range that rents handguns and have her try several. Women are no different than men in this regard, some like large calibers, some like small.

When I was looking for something for my mom, I was leaning toward a .357 magnum. That way she can shoot .38 spl, .38 +p, or .357 mag. This will give her more choice on recoil than many other handguns, and all calibers are proven to have sufficient stopping power.

As for concealment, I would say purse concealment. Just make sure that she wears it across her shoulders, so someone cant just grab it off of her. But I am sure there are plenty of concealment holsters for women.

Good Luck.

.22 Bashing~!

Ladies and Gents:

In almost 21 years as a veteran LEO, I have seen more persons killed with
bullets of .22 LR caliber; than all other caliber's combined~! In most cases,
the victim never bleeds out; and lots of times only a medical examiner can
find the entrance wound~! :scrutiny: ;)
