You don't want to dump too much information on a new shooter all at once because it tends to overwhelm and sometimes discourage them. But, should you decide to do some more research, these books would probably help:

THE FARNAM METHOD OF DEFENSIVE HANDGUNNING (new 2nd edition) by John. S. Farnam

IN THE GRAVEST EXTREME: THE ROLE OF THE FIREARM IN PERSONAL PROTECTION by Massad F. Ayoob (written in 1980 and needs to be updated, but still useful)

THE TRUTH ABOUT SELF PROTECTION by Massad F. Ayoob
(written in 1983 and needs to be updated, but still has much useful information)

ARMED RESPONSE by David S. Kenik

SURVIVAL SHOOTING FOR WOMEN by Tom Givens

DEFENSIVE USE OF FIREARMS by Stephen P. Wenger

DEFENSIVE HANDGUNNING: A TREATISE ON HANDGUN CARRY AND USE
By Glenn Rehberg

I got a bersa 3800cc this week and haven't had time to take it to the range. I think for a carry gun its affordable price, concealability and manageable recoil along with its generally accepted will do reliability and quality makes it a winner. Equipped with an good SD round like corbon dpx IMO it is a killer if need be. Definitely any gun pointed at you gives MOST people pause enough that firing it is usually unnecessary. All choices are made by taking multiple criteria into account and making compromises. Bottom line is help her find her gun that she feels comfortable with the feel and recoil. You will never get anywhere in any gun forum discussing the effectiveness of any caliber.

Your little scenario is really quite unusual I think. Interesting tale.

CCW for females

It's HARD for a female to conceal any kind of firearms in formal business attire.

She may have to consider some form of off-body carry, like in an appropriate purse. Not an ideal solution, but it may be all that'll work in that set of circumstances.

And a couple of other books that might be useful:

The Concealed Handgun Manual: How to Choose, Carry, and Shoot a Gun in Self Defense by Chris Bird

Hidden in Plain Sight by Trey Bloodworth and Mike Raley

A Makarov in a belly band type holster.Reliable, accurate, easy to conceal.Ten million Russian soldiers can't be wrong...

I'm curious as to why her father started following unarmed.

An adept hand with a .22 is a force to be reckoned with.
Very true. It is unfortunate that the idea of using .22 is often scoffed at.

It wasn't a sexist suggestion. If you want to turn off a new shooter before ya get'em started, hand'em a .357 Magnum. Once they've become comfortable with the idea, they can step up a few notches if they wish.

Amen this. I tried to start my wife off with a snubbie 38. She hated it. The recoil was more than she was able to handle at that time. She went to a Bersa 22 and fell in love with both it, and shooting. With that little 22, she leared to shoot, take down, clean, and carry a gun. She learned when to use it and when not too. She got comfortable with the idea of carrying a gun with her all the time. Was it perfect? No, but it was a XXXX of a lot better than crying and begging "Please don't hurt me."

She's moved up to a G-19 now, but it was at HER pace, when SHE was ready.

Hey,

I'm sorry for your friend. Have her try shooting a Glock and Ruger 45. My step-dad has a ruger and its a great gun. The one he has can shoot automatic and semi-automatic. Or she can try shooting a simple magnum. My grandfather who served on the police force here in KY for a long time carries a small magnum that fits in his palm. I'm sure she would be able to handle something like that.

There was a High Roader that had in his sig "a 22 to the brain is better than a .45acp out the window"... which is true, a .22lr may not be the best choice in many of our opinions, but it will still kill when placed center mass.

My best friends wife has a Colt stubby .357, it is a mule on recoil, but she's shot it so much that she can pump out 6 rounds on 6 different playing cards in a matter of a heart beat.

My wife likes her 5" NRA hardball 1911, but her weapon of choice is my Kimber TLE when I'm gone... personally I've had to "put your weapon on the ground" and don't feel like giveing my Kimber to the LEO's if I'm in a Justifiable shooting, so I go with the $400 XD-40.

Most women carry in thier purse from my experiance.

The most valuable tool for any shooter, reguardless of how long they have been shooting is a CCW state aproved class and any kind of training offered, alot of gun ranges do a Steel Challenge or mini-IDPA type of events, to get the heart going and get the gun on target, there's more to shooting that just standing in a booth. One thing that most civilian classes lack is the phsycoligical impact of killing another human.

I'd like to know what the father was thinking going out unarmed, attacking a vehicle with clubs, would most likely give grounds to a justifiable shooting in most states, since there is no were to retreat when such an incident happens... or at least make vehicle manuvers to run the perps over, expecially in the case were 2 men were following a woman with unlawfull intents
