Fast Frank the only way someone might be able to tell is the speed, while seasoned pumpers replicate that speed of action, a vast maturity would have a speed much more like two sylables (spelling?) while your 1187 (and those with experiance on a pump) makes one smooth sound. You did scare the devil out of your feline though...does it have reason to be jumpy at the sound of an action? hehehehe

The Bolt lock on top of the bolt assembly gives the 590 that special crisp sound.

Have you ever noticed that the movie sound of a pump shotgun is always the sound of an empty gun? It lacks the sound of the shell popping out of the magazine onto the lifter, and of the shell going in the chamber.
