Scope a Mosin Nagant

ok, so i now on a Mosin Nagant. I think it would be fun to have a scope on it.

any thoughts on:

should i?
how do i?
what parts and pieces would you recommend?
 
If you must put a scope on it, use a scout mount which does not permanently disfigure the receiver, barrel or stock, or any other original part.

If you want a target rifle or a hunting rifle, buy a target rifle or a hunting rifle. Mosins are collectible, eminently accurate shootable vintage military antiques. You wouldn't "improve" a Rembrandt etching by colorizing it, would you?
 
you are correct.

i do not want to permanently alter the rifle.

my eyes aren't that great, i thought it would be fun to get a little farther out than 200 yards. also, if i were to hunt with it i would like to have a more accurate kill and avoid the gut shot.

i am not trying to create a sniper rifle either.

what is a scout mount.
 
I say go for it! Do what you want to it and who cares what anyone else thinks. I put a replica PU scope on mine then just for grins I refinished the stock, threadded the barrel and installed a Krinkov muzzle brake. I have a really fun rifle now that is deadly accurate out to 200+ yards. The best part is I now have a rifle I like which is much better then trying to make a rifle someone else likes.

I have 2 M-39's with scout-style scope set (scope forward the receiver, above the rear sight). The field of view is too small for my liking as opposed to regular scope set up with the same magnification. I am also thinking of getting a PU set-up (like TIMC's) but also considering Rocksolid Mosin mount. As to altering your rifle, you don't have to. Just get another one to alter.
 
The scout mount requires a special long eye relief scope. I'm not a fan of either setup, truth be told. A while back, I passed up a Mosin Nagant with a tapped receiver, turned down bolt handle (actually cut and a new one bolted on), and a center-mounted Simmons scope. It had a nice barrel. They wanted $200. I was a bit tempted, since I was sure it would shoot well, but I passed. I refuse to support Bubbification in any way.

Yip, they're actually pretty nice. On the lower power setting I can shoot with both eyes open. It can be a big advantage for close in moving game. The one on my rifle is the NcStar 2-7x32mm IR and its held up just fine so far and only $54. The rifle's only been 4moa with surplus and hunting ammo though but it's incredibly fun to shoot!
 
I'm not saying your wrong but if you want to digress into this is better than that go for it. There are plenty of $200 Long eye relief scopes to pick from. Again, this ones working fine after a couple hundred rounds. You can spend your money how you like. I figure if somebody (my self included) is modifying a Nagant...the budget isn't big.

I just finished off a 300 round tin of bulgarian heavy ball with my NcStar 2x7 long eye relief scout scope. No problems what so ever with it loosing zero. With Hungarian FMJBT 147gr ammo it is between 2.5-3". With Privi/wolf the groups shrink down to 2-2.5".
 
If you don't want a long eye relief scope there are some good mounts out there.

If you don't mind drilling & tapping and are going to put the time in to build a nice sporter, buy a Rock Solid mount. Best there is:

Of course, if you use either of these mounts you'll need a bent bolt handle. The Boltman is the best, very high quality work.

replace the rear sight with a rail style mount from combathunting.com they are reasonably priced and the products are good. As for mosins as collectors...not too sure about that as they are so so very numerous. don't be afraid to modify it to fit your own needs and wants it's your gun do with it what you will

folks would probably rembrandts for welcome mats, drop cloths, and fender aprons for working on their chevy's if there were 50,000,000 of them.

i would say if you want to scope it, scope it. if you dont like it, save up another $69.99 and buy another one.

Yes I would. Personally I think Rembrandt's art isn't very good. If YOU want too keep some Mosin Nagants in original configuration for your collection, by all means go for it. For me and my stuff I'll do as I please. Most people don't buy Nagants for an investment.
 
Only thing I did to my Mosin Nagant, or will do, is replace the steel buttplate with a rubber compression pad designed specifically for the Mosin Nagant, that uses the original screws. No permanent modification to the rifle was made, but it's no longer a shoulder breaker.
 
Scope it....

It's no Rembrandt.... there were over 50 million produced..

ATI makes a very nice mount.. requires two screw holes drilled and tapped, If you google ATI I'm sure it will come up... I bought my 91/30 already with the rail and holes drilled. Payed 89 bucks.. Then went to Wallyworld and got a scope that was almost twice what I paid for the rifle.. I spent the next 6 weeks cleaning the barrel, the rifle'ing was fairly sharp. When all was said and done, (I even refinished the stock - Shockkkkkkk to those collectors) but I now have a 1 MOA shooter that is something that I LIKE and all for under 3 bills.

I took the rear sight off mine and that leaves a 22 rail so I stuck a 4X pistol scope on that and it increases its already accuracy by 4X. ha
 
Mike, where did you find that? I can't seem to find anything like that.
 
this thing doesn't kick! of course i had a carhartt hood shirt, carhartt vest, and carhartt chore coat on, maybe that had something to do with it.

I have since added a shell holder on the butt, recoil pad, and swivel mount bipod.
