Just bought a Savage Model 12 FCV in .223 and I'm researching what scope to mount. Have my own ideas, but would love to hear from the herd on all other possibilites. Don't have unlimited funds but I'm not going to skimp.
What say you?

"Not willing to skimp" is kind of a relative expression, but to me, the Vortex Viper PST line of scopes are great budget scopes.

If you are just going to be shooting paper at 100 yards in bright daylight, then you can pretty much go with any scope that will hold its zero. If you're going to be doing any sort of precision shooting at 200 yards and out, then you need good glass. If you're going to be doing a lot of dialing for elevation, then you need good glass AND good internals. The PST has both.

The 6-24X PST runs about $750 and the 3-15x runs about $100 less.

I'm a Nikon fan for price/performance, and a Leica fan if cost is not a concern.
But unless we know what your intended use is, it's hard to recommend something.

I have tried Weaver, Redfield, Leupold, Nikon, Vortex and Bushnell all in the $150-$350 price range. There is surprisingly little difference between them. For hunting and target I prefer 4-16X4x. 3-9 doesnt offer as much on the high end of maginification and stepping up from 3x to 4x on the low end isnt going to cost you any game. There are 4-12 scopes but why stop at 12 when you can go to 16 and pay no optical penalty? Going with a 50mm objective adds weight and bulk so that is why I prefer 40, 42, 44 mm objectives. I hunt at night and almost all my rigs have illuminated reticles. I just got a sub $200 Vortex Crossfire 4-16X50 AO illuminated reticle and it can hang with any VX-2. I am running three vortexs right now and just sent back a weaver buck commander for repair. I like the buck commander allot but it stopped holding a zero after I put $60 worth of ammo through it so that left a bad taste in my mouth.

a little of both

I'm guessing you are answering my first question. If you are wanting to shoot varmints out to 500 yards, then I would recommend a 12x scope at the minimum. I just purchased a Millett TRS-1 4-16x50 for my .308 and it is great. If I was going to mount another rifle scope onto a varmint rig, another TRS-1 would definitely be considered.

I agree with Tony on this one, A Vortex Viper PST is the best bang for your buck.

Here is a link to the Vortex website to get some more info on them.

And here is the link to SWFA's Vortex Viper PST page, seems like they always have the best price on optics.

Thanks to all who replied to my thread..
I've narrowed one of my choices down to a Burris Fullfield II 4.5X14X42MM. Specs and price in line with what I want to do. Will examine all the other suggestions.
Will let all know what my final pic is.

I have a Savage 12 BTVS 223 mounted a Mueller 8-32x44 target dot, super clear glass more please with it then my Nikon Monarch. It is a heavy setup rifle/scope weight nearly 12lbs but I shoot from bench, set on 24 power groups are simply up to how I feel that day.:D

Gunslinger, how far out are you planning on shooting? When choosing a scope, you also need to consider how much internal elevation that scope has. Most less expensive scopes have very limited internal elevation. Something like 40 MOA. On your rifle, that may or may not get you to 600 yards, if you're going to be shooting those distances. If not, then all you need to worry about is how well the turrets track.

Go take a look at the Leupold Mark AR.

Great scope, comes with a ballistic reticle for the AR. You can shoot accurately close or far. At least with the reticle you have some reference marks.

You have to give us a little more to go on. So far what I have gathered is you want a scope for target/varmint work, but no hunting. That's a start, but we need a well-defined budget constraint...is $1000.00 within reason, or are you looking for a sub-$500 special?

Personally I like to prioritize the glass quality if possible; my preferences in the moderate price category are as follows: Zeiss Conquest, Minox ZA-5, Vortex Viper, Sighton S-II, Bushnell Elite, Nikon Monarch, & Leupold VX-3 (which is not great for the money, but still deserving of a spot in the list).

:)

Mueller

I have the same 8-32x44 target dot that Wingman posted mounted on my Savage model 25(.223). It works very well for me punching paper at 100 - 200 yrds.
