i recently got a Steyr Pro Hunter in 7mm-08 and i'm looking to mount a scope on it...already selected a Burris 4.5-14 for it.

i'm looking for suggestion for the scope base. i understand the Steyr uses the same mounting/screw pattern as the Browning A-bolt.

are there major differences/advantages between mounting a single piece base as opposed to a two piece set?

any recommendations as to manufacturer?

i'm looking at the Burris Signature rings. can someone tell me the difference between the universal dovetail and the double dovetail mountings?

should i stay with the smae manufacturer in choosing rings and bases?

thanks for all the help

Only thing I can imagine would be if you needed to be able to move the rings further apart, or closer together due to the size/shape of the scope. With a 2 piece, they are small enough that the rings have wont have any foreward or back adjustability. Probly a non-issue with the vast majority of scopes, but I have had 1 or 2 that didnt have much room on the scope to slide them around(red dots and scout scopes come to mind, as the tube space on either side of the turrets is like 1"or 2" at best usually), so if you couldnt get them close enough together, or far enough apart to be over the 2 small bases, you'd be outta luck with that particular scope/gun combo.with the 1 piece you have a couple extra inches of base to work with.

my preference for most applications are two-piece bases.

you do not have to stay w/ like manufacturers.

look into the talley lightweights or leupold dual dovetails. both are excellent set ups.

dual dovetails are bases that have dovetail ring mounts for both the front and rear rings (twist in rings). standard dovetail is a twist in front and screw on rear. either will work fine, but the dd's are stronger and have a cleaner look.

While, theoretically, one piece bases are stronger, modern two piece bases are much stronger than you'll ever need...

My personal preference is the Leupold two-piece single dovetail bases with Leupold medium rings (for most applications).

The Burris bases work well, but the Leupold bases are sculpted and look much better to my eye...

For what it's worth...

Some 1-piece bases use a total of 3 mounting screws, while virtually all 2-piece bases use 2 screws per piece, for a total of 4. Also, some 2-piece bases are reversible (turned around, not front and rear pieces swapped), and longer "extension" 2-piece bases are sometimes available. This can add additional mounting location options for the rings. 1-piece bases tend to limit action/loading accessibility on bolt actions.

thanks for the replies. i did more looking and the Leupold bases do look alot nicer...i think the only ones that look sleeker are the SK ones, but i've only seen pictures.

just a thought...would blued bases/rings/scope look funny on a stainless rifle or should i stick to "silver"?

how funny looking is a mix and match setup?

I used to think a 1-piece base was stronger, but the 1 piece Leupold for my savage comes only with 3 screws. Each piece of the 2-piece base has 2 screws. Maybe the 2-piece is better attached to the gun than the 1-piece (4 screws vs. 3 screws). Also the 2-piece gives me better access to the chamber.
