rings, bases, and mounting

I'm digging up some information on the web about mounting my own scope. The Burris dual dovetail bases and Signature Zee rings have gotten good reviews. What's the main advantage to the dual dovetails? Does the front have wind drift?

Also, is there a comprehensive how-to on scope mounting floating around someplace?

dual dovetails are stronger than the windage adjust style.

i don't mind the dual dovetail mount - i think there's better ways to do it, but that should not be construed as dd's being a bad way to do it. but, the burris rings drive me up a wall. been down that road before, and certainly won't go back.

if you are setting up for hunting, look at talley lightweights, or leupold/burris dd.
if for varminting, i like warne rings and bases.

weaver rings and bases are good, leupold's std is also good.

Would you need to lap the rings with the Talley one-piece mounts, or do you have to do any prep work at all?

I've never tried the dual dove-tail due to the facts that I like the idea of having the windage adjust capability on the rear base and I've never had a problem with the Leupold,Redfield,Burris standard mounts(Dovetail frt./Wind adj.rear). I personally do not like the Weaver system and IIRC the Signature Z-rings are a Weaver style.I will say if I have to use a Weaver style it would be the Burris Z rings.
I would recommend a system to assure front and rear ring alignment on both the dual dovetail and standard bases and lapping the rings to get the most solid ring/scope contact.

if you decide to do it, be careful and slow - they lap in awfully fast.

If I did have to lap them, it would be my first time to attempt it. It sounds like you just apply the paste and run the lapper back and forth through the rings a few times. Is it more complicated than it sounds?

It was my understanding that the Burris Sig rings with the plastic inserts did not require lapping.
