I'm sure this is asked all of the time, but I will ask once more. This christmas I am going to spoil myself and get a rem 700 sps tactical in .308, I would like your opinion on what the best scope would be for this gun, mostly target shooting and deer hunting. I would like to only spend around $200 and have something in matte black to match the rifle. I was thinking 3-9x40 ????

I am trying to keep the scope around $200 because of my budget, so what is the best for the money?

thanks!

In your price range, I'd have to go with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X (either 32 or 40, I can't remember). It's just one of those scopes that should cost more. If going strictly for target, then the Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10X with mildot reticle. Although the turrets are MOA, you can still make it work. Check out Primary Arms for the fixed 10X. I don't know who has the best price on the variable.

I actually shot a Redfield this past weekend. I remember thinking that it wasn't bad, although I didn't have a Bushnell available to do a side by side. In your price range, I'd steer clear of anything with an illuminated reticle. I'd put the money in the scope with the better glass and forget about the tacticool stuff, until you can afford something with illumination AND good glass.

I put a Leupold MK-4 MRT 2.5-8X on mine. While that is going to be out of your price range, the magnification works well with that rifle. I can hit steel plates at 500 yards. If your eyesight is not so good, maybe you need more magnification, but my point is that lower magnification will cost less and maybe help you get a higher quality scope. A few of my friends said 8x wouldn't be enough, but I think I've proved them wrong. For $200, I'd rather have a 4x than a 16x that sacrifices quality for a distorted image at long ranges.

just my thoughts..... Enjoy the rifle, I've been extremely happy with mine.
