Scope for Browning SA-22?

I don’t know for sure but I think I read somewhere the Browning mount reaches further back and so eye relief is less of a problem than with the Weaver and Leupold mounts.

I haven't had all the various combinations of bases and scopes in hand to be 100% sure but I think you're right at least with the Leupold mount. I called Leupold when I was having trouble with the Browning base as I was about to give up with it. The person I spoke to at Leupold recommended a long eye relief scope with their mount on the SA-22. I forget which one he recommended but it was a handgun scope IIRC. Problem is I had just bought the VX-1 specifically for my SA-22 and didn't want to get a 2nd scope! I persevered and ultimately got the Browning base to work.

The scope and mount I like the BEST, is the one that was originally made for them,

to my eyes, it easily looks the best!

Thats what I use to on my cased set. It was a browning re logoed Redfield 3/4" tubed "Frontier" scope, which was a cut optically above all the .22 3/4" tube scopes of the time. It was before duplex cross hairs tho.

So I got my scope and rings the other day and took the Browning over to my lgs to bore sight and level it.

I started talking to a guy there who is a big fan of the older Brownings like mine and he offered me a stack of bills for it. As neat as it was I couldn’t resist. If I decide I really want an SA22 I can pick up a grade 1 and still have a few hundred left over. Granted it’ll be a Japan made one but who cares?

This is probably a good thing. I’m kind of thinking about a nice semi auto 22 plinker now and I’m not stuck with the Browning, not that it would be a bad choice. The Winchester 63 could be a neat option for another old school gun but once again scope mounting options are limited. Not a huge fan of the 10-22 too common.

The old Belgium (at least some of them) were dovetailed (on receiver) at some point for sure Japan made ones were drilled and tapped (barrel) for a mount. I never had a scope on either but my Father did have one on a dovetail version for a bit.

The one I had wasn’t dovetailed just drilled and tapped on barrel.

I decided not to spend oodles of money and picked up a Remington 552. Not as fancy as some of the older ones but it’s classy looking and along with other things it’ll cycle the cci quiet rounds and I’ve got scopes and mounts that’ll go right on

Mine, in the above pict. is a Belgium model that I've owned since the early 70's, and it isn't dovetailed...

I wear bifocals and wanted to keep the light trim lines on my SA-22. Consider buying Marbles fixed Bulleye Sight and if memory serves me #49 fiber optic front sight. This has worked well for me shooting at the ranges your using. They will cost you about $35.00 if you install them yourself. All standard 3/8 dove tails. The Marbles sights are steel, which made me happy.
That little factory front bead and rear sight would play hide and seek when I tried using them.
