Scope for Marlin 336?

On both my Marlin 336 and 1894C .357 I have a Bushnell Trophy red dot sight that works great. They are small and compact with a 1X power and a 3 min dot, and after getting them sighted in it is just a matter of shouldering and throwing that dot where you want the bullet to go. Even if you forget to turn them off at the end of the day the battery has a 80 hour life to it. Looks great and functions well on a lever gun meant for short ranges.

My Marlin 1895 / .45-70 wears a Redfield 1.5-5x20 in Redfield 'bottom screw' JR low rings on a Redfield JR 1-pc. base.
The rear sight folds down nicely and the front sight is still there.

It kind of goes against my 'logic' to have it set up this way, but it sure looks good and works perfectly.
IF I had to miss a shot because of a failed scope, I guess I'd just have to have the toos to remove the scope and wait 'til I could shoot at an animal with the open sights...

I've got a Savage 99 carbine in .358 cal. with an old Redfield "WideField" 1X5.The scope is attached to the receiver via Weaver "Pivot" style mount/rings allowing me to access the factory open sights if needed in inclement weather. Actually, this is the only non-bolt/single shot rifle that I have scoped. All the rest, including a Winchester 94 and 1886, a Marlin 39A and an old (early 50's model with low comb stock) Remington 760, have Williams "Foolproof" receiver sights installed.

If you must have a scope on a lever-action rifle/carbine, especially if it is intended to be a "woods and/or brush" gun, mount it as low as you can (no "see-through" rings) ,keep the magnification relatively low (1X3, 1X5 or,in a fixed power scope, no higher than 4X) to allow for a wider field of view, and keep the scope as compact as possible to take better advantage of what most lever-actions are best at: good handling and quick target acquisition.

Why don't you do what Rob Lucas did in his '95 Gun Digest article. He mounted a $600 Ziess 1.5-4.5 scope on a $200 Marlin 336. Interesting article.
